DanH 1
right, a few weeks ago i noticed a clicking noise - originally thought was jus the ignition keys jangling but no......started getting worse recently, and more frequent and with no routine. tho it does it rarely when at idle but alot when moving, sometimes it sounds like if left the indicator on, other times its every 3-5 seconds. today it started holding back/losing power at the moment when it clicked, like i dropped off the accelerator for 0.2 of a second?!the only thing is its so infrequent when stationary/idling that ive had me head under listening, but its not done it, plus when driving its to hard to get ur head stuffed in the foot well to hear lol. really hard to locate it. had the immobiliser box behind the dash out today and pretty sure its not that, made sure all the relays in the fuse box were sercure.....please help! cos i dont want it to stop all together! shail 0
Could be battery. When mine was on its way out I started to hear all sorts of clicking noises behind dash before it died. Guess it was just gettin confused with voltage drops making relays etc click. Get batterY and altenator checked out.
Rikki 2
Fuel pump relay cant remember which one it is? Think its the bottom right of the fusebox
DanH 1
battery seems to be charging and holding a charge.......gonna try the pump relay if i can find out which one for sure. dont kno how to test relays?? kno they dont do a haynes for the vr but surely its the same as any other mk3?edit: jus found this (so yea, bottom right ta!)it should be in position 12' date=' bottom right of the main bank of relays - above the long line of fuses.it will have "167" on the end of it.[/quote']
muttley 0
Could be battery. When mine was on its way out I started to hear all sorts of clicking noises behind dash before it died. Guess it was just gettin confused with voltage drops making relays etc click. Get batterY and altenator checked out. X2 that is exactly what mine did when my alternator started to fail
DanH 1
changed pump relay and no luck. seems to be getting steadily worse, will check battery again i think
DanH 1
its not the battery, alternator, fuel pump relay.....but it is a relay for sure. i found it by holding my finger on each relay till i felt the one that was clicking one lol (very technical :-p )put up in the premium members bit this morning was a diagram and key of wot each relay does, i do realise i cant post that in this section, but here is the diagram without the key which is no help so become a premium member if u wanna see it all!the one thats playing up is in position no. 15, the key describes this as 'open'. which i assume means unused or empty. i can assure u its not and its breaking my car!heres an actual picture of it (taken air vent out so looking down to fuse board)...the yellow ring indicates the row of fuses, green is the 1st row of relays, blue the second and red is the broken one. position 15 looking at the diagram. does anyone know wot relay this is? wot it does? deffo an electrcal problem and jus seems to be shutting the engine down for like 0.2 of a second. sorry for big long description but its my only car and needs to be fixed. if it was the gearbox i coulda sorted it by now lol, no f all about electrics tho
DanH 1
so as vw where open this morning, i pulled the relay (involving pliers! couldnt get the bugger out!) rang vw with the codes off it and after some faffing he found it. he rekons its a starter relay?? surely not with the issues i had??so anyway out of pure curiosity (or £25 they wanted for a new relay!) i thought while the relay was out id have a go at starting it. started first time, went for a drive and it was fine! no stuttering or anything! so i'll be leaving that relay out, problem solved! still none the wiser to wot it actually does tho
