muttley 0
just been out to check the VR as its been sat in the same place since last thursday night coz of a alternator failure and some **** has had a go at my locks and coz he / she couldn't get in the car they have filled my locks with superglue and i cant get in the car now as my battery is indoors being charged up.Also noticed that my car is the only one out there with a puddle of water underneath the engine area as its been sunny here today so i'm a bit concerned about that. especially as i cant get in the car to pop the hood.Feel well gutted
bungy 2
I'm a trained locksmith and there is a way to deal with superglue but I can't discuss these things on an open forum. pm me if you need some help.

muttley 0
This will probably need to be moved to another room now but i need your help guys I charged up the battery,I managed to get in the car and pop the bonnet and my worsed fear was confirmed, all my coolant was gone i refilled it with nearly 3 litres of coolant and wanted to start the car so i could warm it up and make the coolant go round the whole engine so i put my battery back in. turned the key and now it dont start at all, its just clicking.so to add to my problems i now have1 a bad coolant leak (the thermostat housing is dripping)2 a leaking rocker gasket3 a knackered alternator4 it wont startShall i give up now coz i'm losing all the love i have for the car very quickly
rodney 17
thats not a long list... just an hours work... keep the faith. when it starts all will be forgiven.....
The Monk 50
Don't give up on the car matey. By no means am I trying to compare, but I've had a lot more crap to deal with on mine and I still love it. All cars have their ups and downs during ownership. The battery has all of its charge I'm guessing?Where does the click come from? Is it clicking in the engine bay or in the windscreen wiper bay infront of the passenger? The thermostat housing can be bought on the bay for as little as £25 new...... I've just bought the whole thing and crackpipe for £30.
VR6Pete 1,455
Thermostat housing is relative cheap to fix, I bought a housing + crack pipe + thermostat for about 26 quid off ebay. rocker gasket is a 30 min job. thermostat housing is easy to do if you take off bumper + rad,
muttley 0
i'm just really disshearted thats all coz i've only had the car two months and had nothing but trouble so far.i've always want a VR but now regretting itthe clicking is coming from the engine bay i think but its hard to tell when i'm sitting in the car to start it. muttley 0
i took the battery off charge two days ago and it was fully charged. when it didnt start i tried another battery and i did the samethe thermostat housing is only dripping would i really lose that much coolant out of that when i havent used it since last thursday
bungy 2
If it's dripping with the engine off, chances are it'll be worse when it starts. Is there no one else from the club near you to spare some time?
muttley 0
If it's dripping with the engine off' date=' chances are it'll be worse when it starts. Is there no one else from the club near you to spare some time?[/quote']i really dont know, even if someone could just look over me working on it so i dont make it worse. lolThe only thing i'm worried about is if i'm losing coolant that quick then arnt i gonna give it more problems with the cold weather we are having. The Monk 50
If it's a clicking from the engine bay, could be a few things. My port of call would be the starter motor and solonoid. The thermostat housing would shrink somewhat when cold and if there is a hole or a crack, it will leak. My crackpipe had a 5 mm hole in it and when the engine wasn't running and cold....took about 1 hr to empty the coolant system.
muttley 0
That rings a bell the guy i got it off said that sometimes the solonoid sticks, i dont even know where the solonoid is lol
The Monk 50
The solonoid is the little cylinder sat ontop of the starter motor matey.Usually a good couple of hits with a lump of wood or a few lightish taps on both will allow it to turn the engine over. The starter motor is the very large cylinder sticking horizontaly out of the gearbox...it's inline with the front of the engine. It has several thick electrical wires connected to it too.Do not hit anything with brake pressure lines or hoses attatched as that would be the clutch slae cylinder and the thermostat housing. rodney 17
I am local-ish but cant do this weekend..... Sorry!A click usually means the battery isnt supplying enough charge.. the click usually is a sign of things engaging but not followed through.. So with the battery in check this. Pop the headlights (main beam) on. If they go off when you try to start your battery - then it's shagged! (the battery) Alternately try jumping it off. If starter is ok then it'll start! Are you AA/RAC member??? Finally starter motors are prone (not just VR6 ones) to sticking in the cold. so a good twat as described above can be a real simple fix!The thermostat is an easy fix and doesnt cost much. I havent done mine personally but everyone says change the housing at the same time. Remember as a premium member you get discounts from allsorts of places.Don't know where I got this from - forgotten what I have read above LOL...The crack pipe in the front of the engine, again is an easy to do. Make life simple and pop the grill off so you can access easier. The other thing to mention is if you let the world (forum) know when you are starting then you can always post on here and people will keep an eye open for you!if my plans change I'll let you knowR
muttley 0
ok thanks for all your help guysI tried two battery's, maybe i should jump lead them together and try that lol.i've ordered a thermostat housing form euro car parts but they dont know what part the crack pipe is and niether do i. what is the real name for it and where is it located. They said they have two thermostat housings listed for my car, one with just one tube coming out of it and a complicated one. i've ordered the complicated one as everything under my bonnet looks complicated to me lolI'm gonna try and get out there today but i'm babysitting at the moment so i cant do it yet. i'm gonna get all the front off so i can get to everything a lot better.will the car be ok in this weather without any coolant in it ? thats my main worry.
