spandangled 0 Posted September 3, 2009 Report Share Posted September 3, 2009 hello people please help me if you can i have a 96 golf vr6 highline, a couple of months ago it was chucking coolant out of the header tank (expansion tank) on the side spoke to a few different mechanics and people who tend to know wot they are talking about and all the same answers came back HEAD GASKET!! although no cream under the filler cap so i didnt bother getting tests done and just got hold of a donar engine and threw it in well not quite engine crane needed!!! any way went fine got it all back together fine filled everything up started on the button no probs now i mot'ed it as it ran out emissions were alot better than the old one was for years (have past tests emissions) but i bring it home from my bosses workshop at a steady speed where i had done it seems quicker than the old one to get away and it seems to be chucking coolant out still yyyyyyyyyy? please help dont say that i have bin done with this engine it runs mint??????????? could it be the header tank is knackered thermostat????? maybe something got to be please Link to post Share on other sites
supadupagt4 0 Posted September 3, 2009 Report Share Posted September 3, 2009 I had the same problem on mine.. I think sometimes garages blame it on the head gasket without actually diagnosing the actual cause. A few times now on different cars i have had the thermostat stuck in the closed position and the coolant seems to bubble over just like a head gasket.Replace the stat and see what happens. Best to replace all pipes in that area as they not expensive(buy kit off ebay) cos they get brittle over time, easily broken.Hope you get it sorted mate.tony. Link to post Share on other sites

spandangled 0 Posted September 4, 2009 Author Report Share Posted September 4, 2009 by george i think we have cracked it found the supposide O-ring mushed up in the top of the cap mmmm not good rang me supplier had one in stock wrapped some ptfe tape round it and stuffed it in the position it should of bin and its taken me for a 60 mile round trip (bit of a detore)lol picked the new cap up and the coolant is still in it all good thank ya people someink so small causes alot of hassle but yey my baby is back making me smile again CHEERS!
