pics of my piston ring replacement, turned into replacing pistons ,4 broken

Recommended Posts

you may have seen my thread asking for info, well here is how it went. many phone calls to patrick (sparks) and the original owner keiron, who without their help i would have never got this far :) thank you to both and pats friend mark too. the pics tell the story, check the heavy duty bracing that had to be used to get the crank shaft nut to break, well funny, two of us weighing 17.5 stone standing on the engine and brace and my 16 stone friend, veins popping, took an hour to hear the satisfying crack as it finally gave up its death grip :) . then when i changed the first set of rings it all looked fine, the second piston fell apart as i took the rings off and it just got worse, see the pics of the missing piece and the top view with all the broken pieces from no 2 piston. a few of the shiny new parts, oil catch tank, braided fuel hose n fittings, gaskets and cv boots, wheel bearings and more. tommorow morning will se me on the phone trying to source new woosner pistons, not going standard ever again.the oversized rods are in mint as new condition and with new pistons, the new turbo, new racing gearbox, new peloquin lsd, i really hope i get next year with only fun and no problems, can attend all the events i want to (fighting torque is my big one). this year i missed bugjam, yearly club meet,action,f/torque and i really got my bottom lip out now after todays piston buisness ( see pic :) )

pics to follow of rebuild. ps; this was the first time i ever tried this mechanics lark,no joke, my pal has been with me helping but we have not done anything like it before, had lots of help on the phone but did it all myself, even took out and cleaned and re seated the valves.(colletts,i have another name for them but cant swear on here so i cant tell you what i think they should be named, lets just say say there tricky little buggers :) but if i can do this then, YOU CAN. :)

Thats a nice engine you have there mate !

Good luck and as you know if you need me just call !

By the way if thats your new head gasket its wrong sorry mate

thanks mate, please enlighten me on the head gasket being the wrong one. i ordered a patent part as the vw one is paper flimsy, and this one was multi layered steel, and as i have just ordered 8.5-1 pistons i have been told to simply leave out the spacer and use just those two and the settings will stay 8.5-1, so i def need to get the head gasket right , thanks

of course not mate.. i aint got long to go myself! just one of those wanna do things lol ;)

only joking :) im hoping the re build goes smoother than taking bits out. lol but so im told the feeling that i will get, knowing i did it,is meant to be worth it,but at the mo im still stressing like mad :) any help with arp torque settings and pattern for head/main/rods would be very helpfull.

  • 3 weeks later...

finally at last, the car is back together, its been very hard to do,not having any experience, but the first drive made it all worth it. the intention was to replace broken piston rings but it turned out to be a full rebuild with brand new shiny wossner forged turbo pistons, matched with the h-beam rods they have transformed the feel of the engine,it gives such a strong pull with no fuss,no boost and only to 4000rpm (being good and letting pistons bed in and not going over 4k ). it feels really tight and strong, im leaving the bhp at 299 (low setting) for at least 500 miles, but its killing me not using boooost.:) the fella that built the engine, put me onto a triple layer metal head gasket from a company called elring, and its the best quality ive seen or used. @ £32 not too dear either. and came seriosly well packed by courier. i left out the c2 metal spacer gasket as the pistons where 8-5-1 comp which was a straight swap which should have left the settings as they where but it will need to be re mapped, glad i have the apexi boost controller as the fueling and more can be done in car on the rolling road. ive lost lots of skin, cut myself to the bone, swore more than ever, even some words i never new existed :) spent over a thousand pounds AGAIN, but madness wins over and i think it was well worth it. i got my mk3 vr6 turbo back. thankyou very very much to Patrick (sparks) , KEV haywire and the car builder KEIRON D for being on the end on the phone with countless questions and problems to solve . my friend who`s garage i used CLIFFORD and DAVE owner of funky bus for the help they both gave and without them would never have been able to attempt a re build. here in no order are some finall pics of the project, roll on 2010 and 12 second q/m time.
