russj249 2
No it's on XP. I had a pc given to me that has been completely wiped and XP installed on it.The Laptop knows it's there and says it's working and ready to use. But VAG-COM can't find it.I think i'd recommend to people to do what you have done craggsy!
thegoth 5
does the usb com port you are selcting match the one XP has allocated the cable to. last time I installed mine it XP assigned it to COM5!
russj249 2
does the usb com port you are selcting match the one XP has allocated the cable to. last time I installed mine it XP assigned it to COM5!Well saying that. If I go onto device manager on my laptop. It comes under COM port 5 and USB. But on VAG-COM there is no COM5 to select. It says there's a 1 and 4 but not used and 2 and 3 don't exist. thegoth 5
under the advanced options on the port setting tab of the cables properties you should be able to force XP to use a decent com number
russj249 2
dont suppose you know the step by step way of doing it. My laptop is in the car now and pc is other side of house..I guess it's device manager -> COM5 ->
thegoth 5
->select port setting tab -> click on advanced -> select an unused com port <= 4 on the Com Port pull down
Ben Seabrook 4
also check how many usb ports your laptop has if so plug the cable into a different usb port then check in the device manager which one it is now in and then in vag-com select the same and bingo - that's what I did
russj249 2
ok still not working..I set it to 4 to start with. Went onto test and the lead thing was ticking a few times. But still said it can't find the interface. So tried it with 2 and did the same clicking but still nothing.and Ben, it's a pretty old laptop I got for free with only 1 USB port

russj249 2
you have turned off your immobiliser (if you have one) on the car as well mate ?well I have a cobra one on there. But it still allows all power to car. Just not allow it to start. I will go and try that with it took off.
Ben Seabrook 4
yeah have to get my car as if ready to start immobiliser off before vag-com will connect - good luck
russj249 2
still nothing. Cant find anything. It's ticking though when I click test. That was with immobiliser off and ignition on.
Ben Seabrook 4
did you run the test before you connected it to the car mate ?
russj249 2
yep. dont that and just re-done it to make sure. Comes up with the same error message.
Ben Seabrook 4
ok and just to check you have confirmed the usb port you have the cable plugged into is the same number as you have selected in the test section ?
russj249 2
Well on device manager. I have USB on the bottoms drop down menu, with the high speed cable (something like that) in there. Then I also have under the COM ports drop down menu COM5(USB)I have changed COM5 to COM4 and only since I've done this has it started clicking when I press test COM4. Any others and USB don't do anything.Sorry if that's hard to understand.. it's late
russj249 2
Good news. I have managed to get an older version of VAG-COM. I think 311.2? Because it's the old version I have managed to find an interface!!Bad news. When I try and do an auto scan. It says that I need to register the version of VAG-COM by entering a key? or something along those lines.
thegoth 5
don't do an autoscan. that goes and tries to connect to 256 odd modules. a mk3 has 2 / 3. engine, abs and transmission if it's an auto. Use 'Select control module' instead.strange 409.1 didn't work for you. it's the one I'm running with the same/similar lead.
russj249 2
ah ok. So if i just press select control module, will that just do a scan right away without any messages or errors? Also how do you get the scope to work?
thegoth 5
you then get to select the controller you want, either engine or abs. there will then be a button to check fault codes.on the shareware versions you are limited to one measure on the scope. you are better off using the 'measurement blocks' from within each controller screen. which should let you select up to four blocks. each block then shows 4 'random' measures. You can log this to a CSV file and graph in excel or openoffice calc.

With a few things at the bottom that don't do anything. I have no lines or anything. Just don't know how to get it started to do something.
thegoth 5
mines not in the car so I can't get that far so can't see what it could be.but as I say don't use the scope as it limits what you can see. Go for measurement blocks which will let you see 12 or so sensor values.
russj249 2
Ok I'll give it a go. No doubt i'll encounter some more problems and have to ask more questions
