best way to clean up a rusty exhaust

Recommended Posts

As the subject line suggests, I have an old and rusty standard exhaust and I was just wondering if there is anyway to bring it back to life and possibly get it a bit shinier?? I hear that Gav is the man for exhaust shining, judging by his Corrado??

Cheers

yeah, id go with what gav says, but give it a good sanding down and then stick some Crust on it before you paint it. You can get that from Halfrauds for a few quid and will make sure the rust doesnt get any worse.

is it stainless?? Does it have pitting???

I ask as in a former life when cleaning the chrome on my old motors there are a couple of products you can buy

but believe it or not a watered down washing up liquid and a pan scourer (NOT To Ruff) will work wonders???

then use the chrome cleaner products after...

take your time and keep a close eye on it... but it works....

to be honest mate, i am not sure whether it is stainless. it is just the standard one that came on the car. i take it you mean the yellow spong top and rough green bottom scouring pads rather than a brillo pad? I might give this a go and see what happens, nothing ventured!

cheers

if it is stainless then another good trick is to rub some wahing powder that you use for clothes on it with a tad of warm water, the wasing powder will cut through the grime and is abrasive enough that you shouldnt need to use a scouring pad, it gets your hands messy when you are rubbing it in though!!!

but if its just rust and not grime then use the wire brush. im guessing if its really rusted then it prob wont be stainless....

My scorpion one was a proper mess so cleaned the grime with washing powder stuffs awesome for cleaning steel better if you can let it soak. Then after used WD40 and 2500 grit wet and dry to rub it extremely lightly until I was happy with the finish............The used an abbrasive scratch removing cutting compund and finish with a metal polish. But I didnt do it all in one hit just a little bit everytime I washed the car each week. ;) good luck
