Recommended Posts

Hey ' date=' where did you get your parts from to make up your oil feed and drain lines to the turbo? Will you be hitting the strip at gti inters?

I used wessex fluid power, but thats becuase their local an i get bit of discount cause we use them for work ;)

Any hose place like hyphose, pirtec etc can make them up for you.

Don't know how many i can do this year now, alot has changed, both work and private life, so going to see what happens, will defo be going to billing.

Hows yours coming along?

Not sure if you have mentioned or been asked thus but how much did it cost or how much does it cost to convert to 4wd?

Well, it all depands on how much you can pick the bits up for, whether you want haldex or syncro.

It takes a while too, its taken me over 2 years to get this far, most weekends, there is alot of hard work invovled, but if your determind then you'll reep the results!

I don't think i can put a figure on it, but as a rough guide, i'd say £2000.... :o

Thanks for the info, the price for a one off mk3 isnt that bad at all, sure you could make it back in the long run if you wanted to!

Im getting hold of some knock earphones and hopefully hitting the dyno in a next week or 2. It will either go bang or run better :)

Um, theres a few more £££ put into this than that! Thats just for 4wd, no engine, brakes, custom tank etc etc.

Good luck on the rollers fella!! :-)

  • 3 weeks later...

Fitted my push button start switch, because my ignition switch cut the power to the igntion after the switch was in 'start', its been getting on my nerves for AGES!

Also bought another wastegate, and tube, so that will hopefully eliminate my boost creep and spikes. :-) I can't bloody wait! I'l have my full, if not more, rev range back!!! :-) :-)

Well i needed to take my exhaust manifold off for the mods on it when my wastegate gets here, so the turbo had to come off. I got bored this evening and thought i'd strip the turbo, and look what i found...

There is about a 2mm skin of rust all over the top of the turbo

040.jpg

So i took the turbo itself apart, to find no seal in the compressor to back plate :o

Scored thurst bearing :-(

051.jpg

Then seperated the shaft out of the cartridge

053.jpg

To find all this crap and coke in the turbine seal heat shield ;(

The shaft also has heat marks on it around where the bearings would locate on it :-(

So, don't realy know what to do now, i'm thinking about a new turbo..... shame i screwed this 1 up.... :-( :@

Any ideas peeps????

Oh and it must have been hot, hot enough so that the rivetted serial tag that was on the back plate has fallen off, so i don't even have the serial number to get spares now! :@ :-(

Id give a call to a decent turbo rebuilders and just get a second opinion on the unit. May find you can just get a kit to rebuild it.

Also wouldnt personally worry about surface rust so much, soon as the car is driven regularly wont be a problem.

Are you running a restrictor on your oil feed at all?

I've tried asking for kits to rebuild it, but they all want a serial number!

I'm worried about the rust because the thickness of the turbine housing has been reduced, and could possibly crack, or be cracked somewhere.

And no, not running a restrictor, but i didn't think you needed to on a journal bearing tub?
