Miss-Vw 2
Hi guysIve noticed over the past week, when I start the VR up there is a very strange airry rattle coming from the engine bay. Once the car has turned over, the rattle disappears. Its very hard to explain, but you only hear it once the ignition sparks and the car turns over, for literally like 2 seconds. Ive also noticed when I am driving in low revs you can hear the same rattle but only ever so slightly and it isnt constant either. Again, it's worse in the cold. Any ideas on what this can be? It's really embaressing having a sexy looking VR6 that sounds like an old banger when you start it up, the start-up rattle is quite loud from the outside too.
Ben Seabrook 4
can you tell where in the engine the noise is coming from ? could be the chains - what mileage is your car on ?
Miss-Vw 2
Oh no, don't say that I cant really tell where the sound is coming from, I might go outside in a minute with my dad and see if he can tell. The mileage on the clock has just reached 120k but the engine it had put in last december had only done 89k. So roughly, its on about 93k now.
Dave Lea 4
tappets mabe
Miss-Vw 2
Yeah, my dad listened to the noise last night and suggested it might be the tappets. Is this a serious and expensive problem? I use the VR to get to work and Im not sure whether it's safe to carry on driving it.edit/ Took it to my mechanic, he said it's the hydraulic tappets possibly not having enough oil. He advised me to drain the old oil and replace with a better type, and apparently isnt anything to worry about.
Antihero1981 8
na..unless the sound becomes crazy loud i would not worry to much.....stick some new oil in and see how they sound..noisy tappets are happy tappets!! lol
Miss-Vw 2
I dont know whether a tappet problem could affect the performance of the car. I have noticed now that when Im driving, the car is less responsive and is noisier than normal. The sound of the car has changed!Instead of the low pitch drone it used to make, it now sounds like a subaru, with a very loud fluttery exhaust noise. Whilst it's idling, it's also alot more shaky. Is this due to the oil/tappets?? I am going to get some decent oil after work (semi or full?) and try and get the problem sorted, I'm worried that I'm damaging the VR by driving it when it's like this. It's confusing me slightly, because Im forever checking the oil level, and it still looks fairly new with an amber tinge to it, so I dont know why the tappets are playing up. jesterwalker69 0
Hmmm this sounds kinda like my car at the mo as well. When idling you can definitely feel the car shaking. Also sometimes it idles lumpy and makes a strange noise when the fan should kick in. Instead of normal fan sound, its more like a light groaning sound that last for about 10secs then goes back to normal slightly lumpy idle! The fans work fine on cool down when i've been for a blast and come home so not bearings on fans or fan motors.
