I'm curious about this too. As far as i can tell from other posts, it is possible to replace the tensioner bolt and upper guide rail without removing the lower cover (and so gearbox etc). It doesn't seem possible to replace the actual upper tensioner plate itself but a visual inspection should show whether this is required.

Since the upper guide rail seems to be one of the items most likely to fail (and is actually the only part of the system specifically designed to be replacable without removing gearbox) maybe this is enough for some cars? I'm certanly keen ot avoid removing the gearbox if I can.

Can anybody comment?
