VR6 timing chain rattle.

Does anyone think i could get away with just changing my upper timing chain tensioner to stop the upper chain from rattling, before i go to the length of doing the whole lot? Its only a slight rattle but noticable.

what mileage is the car on? because timing changes on the vr6 are pretty solid

I'm curious about this too. As far as i can tell from other posts, it is possible to replace the tensioner bolt and upper guide rail without removing the lower cover (and so gearbox etc). It doesn't seem possible to replace the actual upper tensioner plate itself but a visual inspection should show whether this is required.

Since the upper guide rail seems to be one of the items most likely to fail (and is actually the only part of the system specifically designed to be replacable without removing gearbox) maybe this is enough for some cars? I'm certanly keen ot avoid removing the gearbox if I can.

Can anybody comment?

Not as sold as you may think. I had to change mine at 83k.

mine lasted upto 120k

my vr's on 105k at the moment, so do u reckon if i changed the upper tentioner and guide rail that might cure the problem? how much would it take to snap a chain?

if your going to chain the tensioner you might aswell do the chains at the same time as it will leave you rest assured if they do go it could be a costly job as you should know.
