£316 turbo kit??

Recommended Posts

Not too clued up on turbo's so was hoping someone could comment on this kit. Cheap? Performance? Reliable? What is required other than an intercooler?

few of these types of things popping up now, we may be on the brink of a £1000 turbo frenzy, bit sceptical about putting this on my daily driver, but maybe on a project soon to be started!!!

also jim if you got a sec look over this and advise me as to how complete/incomplete this kit looks, cheers matey ;)

both kits are incomplete, both have usless manifolds. and the first one has a too small ar ratio on the turbo imo.

you still need a method to lower the comprtession, and fuel the car. what ive done works well as proven today. source the parts this side of the pond if you can. do your reaserach and you should be ok.. i was reading up about this 6-8 months prior to starting my project. if you see the post in the dub chat , you will see the problem i had. but it involes not getting a reading in 4th and having to run in 5th instead..even then it smoked the tyres when the boost came on....its a animal.

but i digress, the kits aint that bad, but some people wouldnt risk it with a cheapo setup like mine. think about what your end goal is and then work back from there.. it worked for me , but i did buy a large part of my kit secondhand..

yeah , either way. i went for spacer gasket and a us spec mk3 headgasket (metal), drop mine around 2 compression points. pistons work as well if not better, but it is a much more expensive way of the same result. it depends on what you want power wise, and some will say that pistons are ultimatley more reliable, but a engine is only as good as the person builing it, and the method of fuelling it.,

  • 1 month later...

Think i'm going to buy a cheep kit from the US and risk it. The temptation of trying to mod it to fit RHD for the money is to much for me lol

Probably add full APR bolt set, headspacer and C2 software to the somthink like the bigger kit from above.

Will a inline fuel pump and injectors be needed aswell?

"Risk it" LOL! :-)

If your car isn't a daily driver and you've got £500 to spare, I say go for it. IMO you have nothing to lose and only more knowledge to gain, which when self taught, is priceless.

There's nothing bad or wrong in buying cheap parts, we don't all have intergalatic budgets, but what more investment buys you is more strength, more quality, and more reliability. It's the same as GSF versus VW parts. They look the same, but the quality is VERY different.

There aren't enough of these kits in use to show a reliability track record.

As Jim says, those turbos in the cheap kits are chinese copies of the T3/T4 and they literally cost the trade about £100. Maybe it's just me, but if a Garrett GT35R say, costs £1000, you have to ask yourself why the Garrett is 10 times the price.

Anyway, the AR is too small on those cheapy turbos as Jim says. You'll get a big torque spike around 3000-3300rpm and by 6000, your boost pressure will be heading south.

I've been in Jim's car and he's demonstrated very well that you don't have to spend a billion quid to get good results. The one thing he does have on his side though, is OBD2 :-)

and make sure it includes a decent manifold..or like kev will tell ya, its gonna cost you big money time and time again.

btw, my turbo would appear to be a garrett copy..and tbh id be surprised if it lasts a year..and as i do track days alot, i reckon ill be replacing it sooner rather than later..but time will tell.

You never know, it might surprise us all and do 100K miles :-)

Have you tried the MAF clamp yet? See you have a bucking issue in the S/C thread? By bucking do you mean the MAF clipping, or snatching at low rpms?

Are you venting the turbo to atmosphere or using a recirc? I can't remember!
