Trackday Today - Impreza P1's Are Fast!

Recommended Posts

Just got back from Donington where I gave the Golf it's first shakedown. Did o.k. although I'm not convinced I haven't got some 'charger belt slip above 5000rpm. Either that or a fuelling issue. Just didn't seem to go REALLY hard at the top end.

Having said that, it's surprising how much slower you think you're going on track compared to on road - still not used to it.

Took a few scalps - a VR Corrado and standard WRX were easily dealt with but a bloody P1 was just as quick on the straights and had the advantage out of the slower turns. I had to ask whether it was 'out of the box' and it turned out it had been mildly fettled up to 310bhp.

The best bit was lapping my host for the day in his 6 litre V8 Cobra replica twice! But then he was driving Miss Daisy ;)

Perhaps I was expecting too much but I feel a trip to see Vince at Stealth is on the cards in the next week or so.

You've heard the saying "power corrupts" %-6 :D

Would anyone be interested in a VR6OC trackday. I know Claire mentioned the idea at E38. (After I'd got my belt slippage sorted of course ;) )

Sorry mate, I lose track of who's driving the Beast these days.. do you have Mina's old car?

If so.. I'd be suprised if you are getting belt slip as you should be running the dual tensioner in there somewhere..

Sure the car isn't leaning out slightly?

i'm dieing to get mine sorted and take it on track.

i know what you mean about feeling slow in a closed car...makes it very easy to get caught out if you've been driving open cars (that happened to me in a clio...thaught i was doing about 20mph when all of sudden i realised i wasn't...a tad too late! lol)

what suspension set up does the car have? how was it handling wise?

Theres been a bit of talk on the Corrado forum about organising a VW track day. We had 1 earlier in the year at Knockhill but this time were thinking Oulton or Cadwell park as then its more accessible for most of the UK.

Could make it a joint day to get the numbers?

That's obviously my BIG concern having melted a Nissan engine earlier this year. :o

And she's NOT a slut - I prefer to think of her as a good time girl who just hasn't settled down yet! ;)

Do it! It's addictive. The marshalls at Donington were a lot more lenient than anywhere else I've been. At one point I was in an Impreza P1 / Ferrari F355 sandwich going through Craner Curves. Big adrenalin rush I tell you - thought I was Jason Plato for a minute!

Handling wise it's very similar to my old Corrado with a bit more twitchyness at the back. It could do with being lowered a bit for track use. I tightened the dampers right up but still got a bit of lean round bends. I know Mina raised it a tad in the interests of ride quality and spoiler preservation but next time I think I'll drop it right down.

And of course, front drive with a big lump = understeer. Cut slicks will help that (but where do you stop?)

A VW / Audi day would be ace! S4, eh? Hmmm - 4 wheel drive, torquey turbo'd engine (P1 all over again :o ). I'm not playing if it's raining though. ;)

see, that actually puts me off. i can go out on track knowing its a track day and thus non-competetive. but theres others out there who don't think the same, i don't wanna get taken out by some idiot in a saxo! also, when i've been on track for my racing the other guys have all had to pass a test, so theres a fairly high degree of competence. i'd say track days are more risky than that.

i do really wanna do donnington tough.

acf8181 - I know what you mean about the hooligan element (although I'm not entirely innocent, I'm sure) and I can understand your concern. But as I said for some reason at Donington the marshalls seemed less flag happy than anywhere else. Think most of them are in their 80's and dozed off in the afternoon!

This was about the tenth time I've done a trackday and usually anyone not keeping to the regs (overtaking only on the left and only on straights) is quickly jumped on.

I think perhaps because it was a corporate day with lots of different companies taking guests instead of being run by a specialist like BookATrack it was less strict.

There were a lot of race teams testing as well so probably difficult to police. Didn't see anyone damage their car.

Compared to the bikes yesterday (running in seperate sessions) the car drivers looked like we were cruising. Helmet on, brain out for some of them.

Can't guarantee nobody would ever have an incident but what's guaranteed safe in life? (that is actually any fun)

And insurance wise, HIC actually cover trackdays if you have a fire extinguisher in the car! :?

Sound like a salesman I know but they aren't as dangerous as some people (the wife included) think.

I've seen a lot more accidents in motor racing.
