VR6Pete 1,455
its not as easy as it looks. you will need all new seals, I ended up having to get a new thermostat housing and "crack pipe" because... well, the pipe cracked. and themo housing just kept leaking after it was bolted back on....But should be a DIY job providing you have all the seals etc... saichy 1
well do you think that £100 is a good price to get it done?
xyber 1
yeah thats fair if you cant be arsedstat £20 (neuspeed one anyway)new housing £20 (worth getting first off dont try and get away with the old one)2 bottles of coolant to refill £20all the new seals and labourno skinned knuckles or having to deal with seized boltsIts easy enough to do, but its one of those jobs that just does your head in I foundbit of a guide anyway if u fancy it http://www.gti-vr6.net/library/engine/repl_VR6_therm_housing.html
shail 0
Depending on the weather I am going to change my thermostat tommorrow. I'm no mechanic, but I do 'have a go' at most things. I shall report back with how it goes. I've bought a thermostat and one sealing ring.
xyber 1
The housing does tend to be brittle on higher milers and crack went tinkering with or just leak on refitting, I really would replace the lot in one hit, its only an extra £20 to make sure no future hassle
dubdub 0
I recently replaced mine. If you order just the thermo housing you may find the cover from your original may not fit exactly due to some age warping. I found this out some weeks ago, so I replaced thewhole lot, building it up first (dry run) Then stripped and re-assumbled with sealant of course. Pay great attension to cleaning the head face as this is also prone to leakage.
SankysVR6 1
I would just pay the £100, because if it all starts to leak again you can take it straight back.
