hello all, when i start my engine it runs fine for about 30 secs then the revs drop down as if to stall. sometmes it stalls sometmes it doesnt. This happens at random tmies until turned off. ive checked the coil pack and seems ok, ht leads are about 2yrs old. Any ideas/tips would be grateful. (im not much of a mechanic but ill have ago.)

It would help if you told how old your VR is. If it is from 1992-1995 you have an electronic idle-speed device that is known to cause problems when getting older. If it is from 1996-1997 the idle-speed is controlled by the throttle valve and that might just be dirty and needs cleaning.

try cleaning out throttle body mate and then reset it to do this leave drivers door open with ignition lights on youll here a buzzing coming from throttle body when it stops buzzing it has reset and should be ready to start this is something you can do quite easily and from what you have described is the most common problem i have come across on the obd2 setup.to clean throttle body i just remove it from vehicle and give it a good clean out with wd40 and a rag.cheers carl.

Finaly had chance to have a look at the vr, found coil pack was arcing round the ht lead, replaced leads and coil pack and that cured that prob but the car still plays up now and again at low revs after a gunning, also cleaned out the trottle body and cleaned the air flow meter at first it seemed ok but after a gunning it played up again and cut out. Seams genaraly to run ok but plays up after a gunning.

Hello again, its time for an update. Finaly had time to to get a diagnostics test done, had a few fault codes on it, but mainly due to me checking stuff. the air mass meter appeared a couple of times so they suggested starting with that. I changed that today and found the car running even worse than before with a very strong smell of fuel. Many thanks.
