New VR6 Engine

Hi people, I bought a VR6 about 4 months ago. Recently the cam shaft snapped and caused major damage to the engine, its currently in a vw specialist garage and the guys there all recomend that I get a new engine due to a strong possibility that an underlying problem caused the cam shaft to go. They are looking for me but I also want to have a look around myself so I would appreciate any advice or help. Cheers!

U should try looking around the local scrap yards,try sports car breakers in edinburgh i think.

Or just buy another car?

I wouldnt want to buy another car, I paid 2 grand for a 97 P plate vr6, black, excellent condition (apart from the engine obviously). 65,000 miles. Willing to spend a grand on the engine.

You should be able to pick up a good second hand engine without gearbox for about £400. There's actually on on the bay at the moment for £250. Fitting it, as long as it's the same ECU as the one in your car at the moment, should be a doddle. I wouldn't buy an engine that's been standing for a while out of the car and NOT strip and re-build it though. See if you can find one that "can be heard running" (there's one of those on the bay too!) so that you don't have to worry about the fact that it might have been standing for a long time. If you can, and if you've got the time/knowledge, I'd strip and re-build it anyway. That way you know everything's new on the engine and should last you several years.

strip and rebuild will be just over a grand,defo the way to go for piece fo mind.

failing that, im sure VW do an exchange engine but its well over a grand.
