Exhaust recommendations

Recommended Posts

So I want/need a new exhaust. Two different local places have quoted me £350ish for a stainless exhaust to be made on the car with a choice of tailpipes (I'm probably going to go for twin round setup).

However, I wasn't intending on spending that much, more along the lines of £250ish. I have seen a Magnex cat-back system for £306 - but for that money, I'd rather get a custom stainless one.

I'd like some recommendations as to a good aftermarket exhaust, not loud - but fruity and good looking. (h)

Very unimpressed with magnex as the welds rusted and it didnt actually sound much different from OE

In the end i was either gonna go for powerflow or supersprint

Went for powerflow as i didnt have the cash for a supersprint, or though i will get on at some point as they sound awesome when its a full system

Powerflow is quality materials, lifetime warranty and you can spec exactly what you want, but, as with all custom exhaust companys it will only be as good as the bloke making it. I live 5 mins from their UK HQ so they are spot on from there, but have heard of 1 or 2 places being let down by the chimp that cant weld, but get it done then give it a look over and if you dont like something tell them to do it again. On a whole thought they a custom job like powerflow/longlife will get you alot more for your money IMO than over comparable off the shelf systems

I've had another quote from a custom place, they need the car down to give me a quick quote, but they said roughly £250+VAT, which is cheaper than the £295+VAT that my local Powerflow agents wanted. It's still 304 grade stainless and it still comes with a lifetime warranty and I still get a choice of tailpipes.

I have/had a Powerflow but i'm currently in the process of going back to standard as the Powerflow is just way too loud' date=' especially at low speeds - it just booms through the inside..

Fitted and looked great though.

Go back and they'll quieten it down for you for not that much :)

Cheers for the replies. :)

I went and had a custom stainless jobby fitted yesterday and I'm pretty happy with it. It's nice and quiet at tickover, quiet when cruising and under no load and you can hear purr it when you're accelerating. The only worries I have are that it is quite boomy around 2000rpm when under slight load, but I'm hoping that will go away with age as it beds in.

It looks great, the twin oval slash cut tailpipes really suit the Golf and I'm glad I chose them over twin rounds, or a single oval.

Quick pic - I'll take a few better ones later on in the week. :)

It was done at the local agents for Longlife ( http://www.longlife-exhausts.co.uk/). Took it in for a quick quote (after being quoted £375+VAT by another place who I didn't like anyway, then £295+VAT by Powerflow) and the guy at this place was really helpful and I left it with them the same afternoon, I even got a free courtesy car, which was a hideous Saxo VTR!!

It has 2 boxes, small middle one after the cat and the back box, is 304 grade stainless and comes with a transferrable lifetime warranty. The total cost was £340.

I just hope the mid-range boom tones itself down a little, or I'll be driving everywhere at 3k rpm! ^o)

I got a longlife system and the tone does move/chill as it beds in.. I got a 3 box on mine :) I bet you love drivin' thro anywhere where it resonantes now LOL :)

I must admit you can have so many options and they actually know what they're talking about. Plus it is TIG welded not just mig as some places do.

Njoy!

for those how has a jetex system (sorry posting on someone elses thread).

i just looked for one for my vento. there are 2 options. both have same details expect the notes.

one says "shiny stainless"

other says "This system is for higher performance engines or customers requiring a more sporty exhaust sound."

which one you guys get? IMO sounds like the 2nd 1 is one you would buy in the boy racer years if you had that kinda money to spend. not sayin i did.

Milltek don't list one for ventos.

Just had a quick look for you mate, it doesnt say about the boxes but you can see from the pics, one comes with a firebox (3 box system) and the other is a straight pipe from the cat to the centre box,

I've got the 3 box on my golf,best £300 I've ever spend !

The bore of the Jetex are Bigger then other xzorts ! get the 3 box and if / when the state of tune of your engine require better breathing ( I think you'd need to be making 350bhp+ before) , replace the front box with the straight thro pipe . :)
