I think VW wanted to make the golf vr6 into a comfortable cruiser and the corrado, more of a sprinter. They knew that the golf would be a good seller but the corrado would be more of a challenge to shift in large numbers so they gave it the more powerful engine in an attempt to attract customers.

It's got the 3.6 diff too.

...I've heard this before, and PhatVR6 used to always say the Rado box was the one to go for due to ratios but I'm 100% certain at the VR rolling road day at Stealth Vince told him that all VR boxes were exactly the same.......

...so I'm still not sure!! :( %-6

We had a thread about this over on the corrado forum, it turns out the 3.6 final drive was fitted to the american corrado slc (vr6).

The uk corrado uses the same final drive as the golf though I think they have different gearbox codes so there may be other differences.
