Hi, im new here and iv just bought a 1993 VR6 and have a few problems, not sure if they're serious or not, iv had a look through the forum and im still stumpped. please can i have your opinion on these faults...

the car is miss-firing all through the rev range, especially at about 4000rpm, iv noticed that the distributor cap (?i think thats what it is?), or where the ht leads come out from is cracked, im guessing this is the problem, is this the coil pack, or is this a distributor cap with rotor arm underneath?

my car groans as i gently pull off in first gear, it can be felt through the gear stick, what could this be?

also, now and again theres a high pitch noise coming from the right hand side of the car (as im sat in it), that changes along with the rev's, could this be the belt tensioner pully?

thanks in advance!! iv searched through this forum but im still a bit vague about these 3 faults.

cheers!

chris

OK welll..

If you have a distributor cap version with the rotor arm in it then yes that'll be the cause of the missfire. (& you wont have a coil pack)

Need a bit more on the groan noise. susspension/gearbox/clutch or you 'cos its early in the morning ;)

When the car first starts you get a whine from the car but that goes once warmed through/ no longer on choke. That's normal. If you have another noise then we'll need a little more information again.

Hope it helps

Thanks for your reply's! i took a visit to a VW shop and a guy took a look at it who seemed to know his vr6's, he rekons iv got a coilpack rather than a dizzy... its a square shape (???), is this incorrect? maybe il take it off and have a look? but he seems to think it could be the plugs, so iv bought some plugs and will try them... strange thing is, is that it only missfires for the first 3/4hrs of driving it from cold, after that she runs perfectly with no missfiring.

the groan happens when i pull off, while the clutch is bitting, i can feel it a little through the gear stick... maybe it is just me groaning!!

the whining noise happens when she has warmed up, it comes and goes, iv noticed a noise when i first start the car, but this is a different noise, il check the belt tensioner on weekend as this seems to be a common thing, looking at the threads.

another question.... am i suposed to hear an auxillary water pump when i turn the ignition on? run off battery?

thanks again!!!

cheers,

chris.

it sounds like your belt is slipping which is causing the squell and the crack in the dizzy is probably the cause of the car mis firing but your best bet is to replace the dizzy cap rotor arm and leads as you probably dont know how long they have been on the car for and either of them could be breaking down. the groaning im not to sure about but if you can feel it through the gear stick it could well be a mount of some sort as it sounds like a rubber bush moving around. if none of this is any help then my apologies i'll shut my pie hole :-|

Yep, it's an electric pump situated just behind the coilpack, with two cooling pipes coming off the bottom. The first one in this list http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?162937 They can be quite but most make some noise, you should certainly be able to feel it running.

thanks i will look out for it, iv never heard it running, i will pop the bonnett and a have a peep. should it run all the time without fail, or is it dependadnt on the temperature of the water, like the radiator fan?

thanks.

thanks for your help... just to let u know, the missfiring has stopped and she is now running great, i replaced the thermostat because it suddenly got stuck shut and boiled the coolant. after replacing it, my temp gauge starting working and missfiring disaperared, im guessing my cold start valve is plumbed on the cold side of the thermostat, which was stuck slightly shut causing my engine to run too rich and missfire??

thats my guess.

thanks again!
