Strange noise- Very Worried

Recommended Posts

As soon as I start the engine on my VR I am hearing this very strange noise coming from the engine. It sounds like something is kind of rattling. After a few minutes of driving the noise settles but can still hear it. I have just found a whole in my cat which I have solved from a previuos thread, but could it be related, or could it be the chains. The car has only done 73k miles, so seems a bit too early in its life to be the chains. I want to get it checked out, but dont really want to spend loads of £££ to find out nothing is up. Is there anything I can so?

Thanks in Advance

I think your best off taking to a specialist to be looked at properly and for peice of mind - nobody can know for sure if theres anything wrong with the car without even looking at it. When I had some issues with my car, I booked it in with The Phirm & Tim went over the whole car for me and recommended what needed doing - no pressure just gave me the truth and my options! I'd recommend them to anyone as would a lot of people.

Wouldn't have thought it was the chains.

Maybe just needs a good Oil change. VR's are naturally a little tappetty when first started but it should clear fairly quickly.

Best bet is to get it looked at by someone who really knows their stuff. It will probably turn out to be nothing ;-)

Mark.

I don't want to make you feel more worried but my car had to have it's chains done at around 74k miles. However sometimes the chains can last well over 100k miles. However it is more likely to be noisy tappets in this cold weather. As said above try to get to The Phirm or Stealth. Both are well worth a couple hour's drive purely because they are the best in the country for the vr6 - but half the price and far far more experienced than a main dealer. Everyone on this site will recommend these two companies. I use The Phirm.

Its quite normal in this cold weather for your car to be more tappety / rattly when you start it up.

Let us know how you get on.

Don't have experience with Stictly Dubs. Haven't heard much about them although I have heard of them. If it turns out to be your chains or if your car needs anything big being done to it I would strongly recommend taking it to Stealth or The Phirm. I took my car to a so called vw specialist and they conned me - turned out they never in fact did my chains only replaced the tensioners! So be careful where you go. What I do know is Stealth and The Phirm are the most highly recommended on here. The phirm do all the cars for the international VW Performance magazine. Very friendly down there and if you're in essex not overly far from you. Worth the trip and will save you loads in the long run.

Best to get them to look over it (which they'll do for free if you're a new customer) and will tell you straight away what it is.

Good luck mate.
