Gibs20 0
At 2k rpm there is a slight rattle/vibration from the engine, above or below 2k rpm it is gone. It is very slight and most people wouldnt notice it, its just that i do and my friend who is a mechanic did but just said 'oh dont worry about it'. I just want to check that it is nothing to worry about. Its on 67k and just had an oil change it runs and pulls v well so just wondered wat that noise could be..?
Chrisdut 0
where is the noise coming from? is it between gearbox and engine section? if so poss chains and rails
Gibs20 0
Its hard to pinpoint, im really not sure. Whats the best thing to do? Can the chains be physically checked or is it just a case of a decent mechanic listening to them..? I thought they were good for 100k plus?
SankysVR6 1
Theres a sound clip of the chain rattle in the premium section.Or you can try doing a search on vwvortex for it.
Gibs20 0
Thanks sanky listened to the sound clip and it certainly doesn't sound like that! You can barely hear the car on tickover its just that slight vibration at 2k, maybe its just normal engine noise... :S
VR6Pete 1,455
That sound clip is taken from a car that the guides were snapped and very badly worn... worse case scinario shall we say...You still may have a slight rattle from the chains...what year is your VR? there were 2 designs, on the earlier VR, its a double top chain, on the later VR's they were a single chain with improved guides...There is a guide in the premium member section that details how to do an inspection of the top guides....Pete
Gibs20 0
It's the later one, late 96 OBD2 n' all that. Could it really be the chains with that mileage!? I will have it checked anyway, it's very very slight but with me, any noise, rattle squeek on a car is a big deal. I'll give the phirm a ring at the weekend I think and see what they say. Im not a premium member yet unfortunately, I tried to upgrade a few times but it said the membership upgrade thingy was not available or something. Il try it again soon, about time I did upgrade! Cheers anyway people...
VR6Pete 1,455
Hi,I'm on a 1997, and on the single chain... cant remember what year they came into effect off hand...It might not even be the chains... could just require a new hydrolic bolt that keeps the guides "taught" or it could be a broken guide, which isnt uncommon!Think my chains were done with 80k on the clock..Membership is down at the moment.... an email will go around once it's back up and running...Pete
Bigjobbo 0
I reckon i've got the same noise on mine. You really have to divide all the noises to get it, but it's there. I'm a mechanic and i've put it down to slight wear in the chains, and i'm not worried. My engine has done 99k.Good luck
Russ_vr6 12
is it worth changing the tensioner bolt? as its a 5 min job would thisa cause any damage if they main tensioners were worn? i mean it wouldnt put any undue pressure on them with a new one?
Gibs20 0
Thanks for all the replies, appreciate this. Bigjobbo is the noise on yours also only at 2k and best described as a very slight rattle/vibration..?Cheers also vr6pete will upgrade when i get the email
VR6Pete 1,455
Dont see why not, I've had a bit of chain noise come back on mine after the rebuild, Vince was gonna throw in a new bolt when I went down to stealth racing last time, but didnt have one in stock at the time, so I cant see any issues with that.Pete
Bigjobbo 0
It's around that mark yes, and it disappears either side of 2k. I'm doing the chains soon, because it needs a clutch, so i'l let you know, if you can hang on till then.
Gibs20 0
Yeah must be the same thing as me bigjobbo... If you could let me know what you find that would be good, il just make sure it doesn't get any worse
