burt 0
hello everyonesorry if this has been asked loadsjust joined the site and am looking into buying a VR6,ive always thought they were cool and the nicest sounding motor about...im just looking your opinions on performance, reliabilty, fuel consumption and handling etci dont rag the shit out of a car but i like something tight to drive and with a bit of powerat the minute i have a 1993 civic vti, around 170bhp and weighs 1040kgs it sits with a new type R so wondering how a vr would stand up against it...i miss having some torque also...but its well put together and a good all rounderany comments and info would be greatThanks!Burt
Jk* 0
As Nike would say "Just do it". Fuel consumption is a bit shit, but the build quality and sound is great. Im glad i bought one.
burt 0
how bad are we talikng on fuel mate?id say the civic gives between 35 and 40mpg at a constant 60mph on the motorway very sensible driving or more like 25 around town/giving it some stick..is a vr6 much worse?
Jk* 0
I get about 23mpg around town driving sensible, and about 30mpg on a stretch sat @ 80ish mph. Each car differs obviously, but i love the VR, only owned it about 4-5 weeks now.
mike 6
i dont think that a VR will be much of an upgrade in power well 4bhp more, i reckon that it will be more torque than your civic and sound alot sweeter tho! reckon it will use a bit more petrol too having another 1200cc and 2 extra cylinders!! Jk* 0
Arent the OBD2 pushing more the 184bhp figure (not released by VW)?
burt 0
it seems the OBD2 is the one to go for then?these are 96 onwards arent they?the civic has a good power to weight ratio but im sure a vr will have better midrange plus loads more torque....vtec sounds nice but a vr is one of the nicest sounding cars ive heard, ive been searching for a sound clip on here lol
mike 6
yea obd2 is suposed to be slightly more powerfull.. late 95 onward.it will be bit more powerfull than civic but if your just after power your probli better off with an evo ,300zx or something...search 'you tube' for a vr6 video get some sounds off there. burt 0
no dont get me wrong mate im def not after something like an evo or anything, way too expensive for me.i just wanted to try something different as ive owned most of the other hot hatch type cars available, but yet to own a golf...only real problem being i live in Belfast N.Ireland and they are few and far between over here
mike 6
i dont really class them as a hot hatch, they are quite heavy steerin ect compared to small hatches and need suspension upgrade to get any decnt hard driving. not trying to put you off like.... its hard enough to find a decent one over here and theres a fair few so good luck! matth76 1
I'd class it as a hot hatch. A hatch back with 0-60 time 7 secs (less if its lightly modded) is pretty much a hot hatch. I agree its not as lairy in looks as some older RS turbos and the like but it has far more performance but with subtle looks. I don't think many people even realise it has a 2.8 let alone a v6! Most people know my car is a "performance" car though as nearly every young bloke seems to try to prove something with my car. Its the same weight as a civic type r with the same performance (if lightly modded with exhaust and air filter). You definitely have to lower it. For some reason vw forgot about the suspension...but that is the only let down. Once you have your car lowered just 35mm it will look perfect...as it should have done out of the factory. Performance wise and sound you can't beat it for the money. A mate of mine at work has an Audi S3 (another 'hot' hatch with equally subtle looks) ..this is a fast car with 0-60 of 6.8secs, however it is very heavy (nearly 1400kgs). He couldn't believe how fast my car was when he got in it... I would say mine has roughly the same performance as his but sounds far better. You won't be disappointed burt. Mpg I get around 35 if I drive about 70mph and don't rag it. Maybe 20-25mpg around town. Not too bad considering its performance. Can't go wrong reliability wise... as long as it has a full service history. Go for an OBD2 as they have approx 185bhp standard. When/if you get one either go to Stealth Racing or The Phirm who will sort your car out for servicing, repairs, tuning etc... they are specialists and far better and cheaper than main dealers. mike 6
yea some good points made there matt, they need upgrades shocks aswell as a drop, some thing i have yet to do tho!if your after a golf vr6 is defently the one to get, over gti's ect! (at a resonabe price) only really the late mk4 turbo that can come close imo, but that would cost over twice a vr6
