yeah but this is what the wife keeps telling me (and i agree to a point). The M3 was built to handle 300 odd bhp, the suspension, chassis, bushes, gearbox, everything. The vr6 was only meant to handle 174 (for mine). Now i know you can stretch most things to more than that, but i just think that amount of power and the reliability factor stops me from doing it. At the end of the day im gonna have the same car just more wheel spin. Unless you go LSD's and stuff, and by that time you could've bought an M3 which would still be faster IMO. I've always owned golfs, and had a brief fling with an RS Turbo and i'd love to charge my VW and be a proper hardcore VW modder, but everytime i look at an M3 i fall in love. And then there's the challenge of taming it !

Olly K you and me must have married the same woman cause my wife says excatly the same thing.Tell me does your wife say "Uh O!" when you come in and tell her that you are thinking of selling the car AGAIN!! cause mine does, and she knows that the decision is likely to change 1/2 a dozen times befor the day is out!! Oh well,at least they are on our side.

By the way,I'm 35,36 in December so my insurance won't be too bad, might even register and insure it in the wifes name with me as a named driver as she will get a better deal than me all day long(The VR6 only cost me £354.00 doing it this way!!)

I'm agreed with you (and your wife) Olly mate.

If you want a big hike in power, it's more cost-effective to buy it out of the box.

Look at it this way. £3k to fit a supercharger, £1k for 248 cams & remap, £2.5k for a 6 speed uprated 'box, £1.5k for big brakes, £1k for some serious coilovers.

£8k. You can get an L-plate M3 for that money. And you could keep your VR6 as a second car/plaything if you wanted to.

My E36 cab was a 328i, not an M3 unfortunately. I test drove several M3 coupes before buying it though, as these were about the same money as the 328 cab. In the end, I chose pose over power. I had 9 points on my license at the time too, which also contributed to the decision!!.

The BMW scene is very different to that for VWs. OEM is king. Modding is usually constrained to changing the wheels to one size up. Even lowering the suspension is frowned upon. The DIY mechanic is not well catered for, there isn't a friendly owner's community and there are very few useful forums. You'll find it quite tough to avoid the BMW main stealers who will look at you like a money pot. In short, a BMW is not a hobbyists car.

The E36 M3 is a very entertaining drive, though. Very quick from standing and pulls hard all the way to the redline. The engine sounds really sweet too. Grin-factor = high!

And they look great (apart from the yellow ones) imo. Very aggressive looking. The E36 design really seems to be standing the test of time.

There are other choices if you're hankering for more power. The word 'Impreza' is the first thing that springs to mind, although the Audi S4 is a classier alternative and the most logical progression from a Golf.

Me, I'm just waiting for second-hand RS4s to come down in price a bit....

Olly k,

My wife also just laughs at me when i tell her that "I woulden't even have to chang anything on it" and "everything that i would want to do,it has straight out the box!!" and don't even try to mention that you would keep it standard!!! She would laugh all day long at that one mate.

As for the Audis,I'm sure i'll owen one in the future but the Imprezas are a strange car to me,every time i consider one, something else pops in the way and i choose that instead. It's almost like I'm not ment to have one,and i know that they are great cars caus my mate has a PPP and when i drove it,i was impressed!

Oh,here is my colour preferences for the M3

1st Metallic Black

2nd Dakar yellow

3rd Estoril blue

4th Techno violet

what about you??

yep, i'd have a yellow one! i can't stand boring, dull colours. i love the way my red vr6 stands out sooo much more than the usual boring coloured ones (no offence), it looks faster than the rest when its standing still!

dunno why i'm talkin about M3's...scooby for me next (either a '99 RB5, or if i have loadsa money a brand new shape WR1 (mainly for the adjustable diff)

are audi s4's down in the 8k price range then ?

About £12-13k for an S4 2.7 bi-Turbo Quattro on an S or T plate.

So a little more expensive than an M3.

I just looked on AutoTrader and E36 M3 Evo prices have really come down in the last year. £8-9k for a 70' date='000 miler. I can see now why you're so tempted!!

Find a good BMW specialist Independent Mechanic to do your servicing, and you're onto a winner, I reckon. :)

If the prices come down much more, I'll be tempted to pick one up myself, strip it out, rollcage it and use it as a track day toy.
