Engine Mods v. Insurance

Recommended Posts

My car is now going better than ever after major heart surgery...but due to the expense I will keeping it for another year or two.....so I thought....well, I could sup it up a bit.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the effect of engine mods - eg chipping, induction kits etc...on insurance?

It entirely depends on the company. Some don't charge extra for cosmetic changes, but everyone will increase their premiums if you have performance modifications.

By how much is anyone's guess. An exhaust won't make a lot of difference, an induction kit might depending on the insurer. Chipping will make a difference with everyone, but by varying amounts. Some won't touch it full stop (I also found this with suspension).

Doesn't help a lot, but you'll have to shop around. Call up individual insurers and ask - those that are more lenient will be happy to tell you so.

Some mainstream insurance companies can be very funny with mods. When I got my VR I went to Admiral. Subsequently when I declared the car to have an upper strut brace, they asked me to find another insurer.

Best to go with an understanding specialist. Also look for policies that replace any damaged modified items for the same and not standard factory fit parts.
