More members set to benefit from Chris Knott service...

Insurers have relaxed their rules under our car clubs and enthusiasts offering which means we should be able to help more of you get a better car insurance deal.

We'll still be applying common sense to our quotes but there'll no longer be hard and fast minimum driver age restrictions on models. Instead we'll be assessing risks on a case by case basis - looking for relevant driver and vehicle experience.

All drivers must have held a full UK licence for at least 3 years and have 2 years NCB to use (gained on the quoted vehicle or another that can be mirrored across inc. company car).

Winter Tyres and Chris Knott

Hi, I'm often asked on club forums (and Facebook groups) about switching to winter wheels/tyres and whether an insurer will charge extra if you do.

As it's getting to that time of year again I thought I'd just reassure any Chris Knott clients that the insurers we use don't usually charge for this. However, if you are thinking of swapping your wheels we do have to log when you make the switch and then again when you go back to normal - so please let us know on 0800 917 2274.

Cheap quotes are one thing but level of service and protection is also important. I know that a £285 quote isn't going to include like for like mod cover and legal expenses but it does show that there was room for a better price with someone somewhere so I found a bit of time and decided to speak to the specialists.

My first session of form-filling and a (chase) call to another of STOC's recommended Insurers was a fruitless exercise. He was incredibly helpful as we went through all the details, he even seemed surprised that I'd been asked to declare the optional extras and even the trivial bits like a gearknob with Admiral but said for peace of mind he'd list them on their system despite it having no weighting on the quote.

Eventually he came back with a quote of £355, I was more than happy with that (just for the fact it includes like for like cover alone). He even made a note to allow me to add the private plate that my wife wants to buy me for my birthday (a few days after my renewal) without any admin fees. Totally satisfied not only do I feel confident that my car is properly covered (always a grey area with mainstream insurers and modded cars) but I've saved money (even compared to last year's premium) and will definitely be giving them a call when the wife's renewal is due in November!" A big thank you to every club member who has requested a quote or gone on cover with us this year - it is greatly appreciated.

This just to let you know that though our normal working hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12noon there are alterations if you need to contact us over the festive period...

Choosing your own repairer.

Hi,

I was contacted recently by one of the clubs we work with. They were concerned about the issue of 'approved repairers' and they wanted to know what our insurer partners' stance would be.

Clearly, most car club members wouldn't want just anyone repairing their pride & joy - you probably have a preferred bodyshop in mind already as you're reading this. And this is where the issue lies.

If you have an accident and want to use your preferred bodyshop over the insurer's approved repairer, can you do it without penalty?

We've heard that some insurers make it difficult by doubling the excess or not using genuine OEM parts. That's not what you want!

I checked with our main insurers and they are very accommodating. They recognise that car enthusiasts like you will be more interested in who the repairer is and whether any parts are pattern or genuine.

So I'm pleased to confirm that you are able to request that your preferred bodyshop is used. Where there's no reason not to use them i.e. they are not majorly uncompetitive, the insurers on our panel will be happy to accommodate your request.

There will be NO increased excess and, wherever possible, the use of genuine parts will be approved.

The only slight downside when you choose your own garage is that the insurers can't control whether your repairer has a courtesy car available. But I guess for many of you your club car is not your main vehicle and if that is a problem it's still possible they will have one available for you - it just can't be guaranteed by your insurer.
