  1. The tappets on my VR have been noisy since i drove a bit quickly through a big puddle, but lately they are getting even more noisy, I am looking to replace them, the question is where from? Should i bite the bullet and get them from VAG, or are there cheaper options that are just as good ? Thanks in advance Mark
  2. My mk3 VR6 has recently started burning behind the dash, a few times I have had smoke coming from the steering colum on start up. But no always. Just wondering if anyone else has had this, any common problems on the MK3? Thanks Mark
  3. I'm am looking into fitting an oil catch tank on my VR from the cam cover to remove the PCV Tube. I am just looking for a bit of guidance as to the best tank and if possible some photos of your tanks and locations.
  4. I'm on the look out for a genuine VW Dog guard for a hatchback if anyone has one lying about. Thanks Mark
  5. my VR started making a very bizarre grumbling noise, that sounds like its coming from near the gearbox. when I drive normally, there is no noise, but when I change gear there is a small grumble,I can feel it through the clutch pedal, and again if I put it in neutral, at first I thought it was a loose wheel, but they are all fine, all bearings are also fine. I noticed there is a small amount of play in the gear box drive shaft flanges, could this be a cause? I haven't checked the drive-shafts are bolted up tight, so will do this tomorrow, but they look ok. anyone got any ideas as to what
  6. there is nothing obvious there, although there is some water marks near the expansion tank, but I have put this down to a water pipe blowing a wile back, I think a full engine bay clean and de-grease is in order, that should help spot any new leeks.
  7. could be the rad cap, oil cooler is new and water tight. I think the rad cap has to be worth swapping for a new one.
  8. carpets are dry as a chip! that's what I thought at first too.
  9. I have a VR6 golf that has a bit of a hydration problem, I cant seem to keep the water in the engine. there are no signs of leeks, if I run it stationary, there is no evidence of water loss, but it needs a top up after a few days of driving. I have swapped the thermostat housing and oil cooler, but this hasn't helped, there is no mayo in on the oil cap. Any ideas? on another note, recently the dash wont show the outside air temp, could this be connected ? Thanks Mark
  10. To be honest I thought the replacement plastic one would be more expensive than they are, I think I'll stick with plastic, thanks for finding the alloy one though Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. I'm sure I have seen somewhere that you can get a billet thermostat housing to replace the crappy black plastic one, does anyone sell them in the UK? Thanks Mark Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Nice one, thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. My outside air temp sensor, the one that fits in the bumper seems to have dissapeared! does anyone know the part number so i can get a new one? if anyone has one for sale I would be interested too. Thanks Mark
  14. I have narrowed mine down to the LPG conversion, its fine on petrol, good luck with the fault finding.
  15. Checked the maf, it does change when I unplug it. How do Ido the TB adaptation? Ignition on for 5 mins without starting?
  16. My VR engine is hunting at idle and cutting out, its driving fine and pulls well, but i cant stop the hunting, I have recently changed the plugs and leads, I also swapped the coil pack (OB2) and this hasnt helped, I did however notice yesterday that the outside temp is not workin on the dash, I havent noticed that before. Any ideas? oh one last thing to mention, there is a small blow from the cat to the mid pipe. Ta Mark
  17. Small update, I changed the ignition leads, that cleared all the error codes on vag com, I also found that the clip holding the air box closed was broken, this couples with a missing arch liner was allowing spray from the tyre to enter the air box above the air filter! The air box was soaking. This has now been fixed, I'm not sure if this would allow water into the oil, so I'll be changing the oil cooler when I change the oil. It's running a lot better, but not 100% So still got things to sort out, but I'm getting there.
  18. Lol that sounds like a good way to test one. Thanks
  19. Looks like trip to TPS tomorrow then, new leads, hopefully that will get it running a bit better, oil, oil filter and an oil cooler. Can an oil cooler be tested? I have a spare somewhere from an old vr I stripped. Thanks Mark
  20. Ok, that's worth a look. Is there water in the oil cooler?
  21. Ok, well it's due an oil change so I'll do that and see how it goes. Thanks
  22. not overheating at all, there is quite a bit of mayo. its worth mentioning that the car has an LPG conversion, im not sure if that would cause the mayo, but it may contribute to the water loss.
  23. OK, I checked the compression, I had results ranging from 10 to 11 bar, on all six cylinders, which I believe is fine, so where is the water getting in? unless its not gone between the cylinders, I haven't checked the rear left of the engine yet, I'll do that later. Also i check the leads and they are arking like mad! so I'll get a new set from TPS tomorrow. fingers crossed that will solve the poor running.
  24. Awesome thanks, I hve changed the maf and blue temp sensor i had with spares, cleared the codes and they came back, I also changed the coil with a spare, but they could be just as bad as the originls, I have had a look for arcking from the leeds in the dark and havent seen anything, the fine mist on the coil pack sounds like a good idea, the leads were ebay specials, that are about a year old, so i dont have much faith in them. can leads be ckecked with a continuity test? Just off to the garage, i'll be back with updates later. Thanks Mark
