  1. Part of my misfire was made better by the mechanic lubricating the electrical connections on the leads, but Its not something I have ever done on any of my other cars.
  2. Being unsure where to look next I took it for some more diagnostics. They took off all the leads and lubricated the contacts before putting them back. The outcome of this is that the engine runs more smoothly which has made the problem easier to diagnose: The problem is when the engine is under load it feels like a holding back rather than a misfire, so I'm thinking of the following fueling culprits: 1. Fuel Pump gauze blocked 2. Air Mass Meter 3. Fuel pressure regulator? The inline fuel filter has been replaced.
  3. interesting you should say that as no 6 is the one that is misfiring. Before we replaced the leads/plugs the plug lead was covered in engine oil and the spark plug itself was completely covered in black oily gunk and clearly had stopped working. I had a look just now, its 500 miles since they were replaced. No 6 has the correct colour on the electrodes but there is some oily stuff on the end of the thread. and the thread is 'wet'. but didn't smell of petrol. I took another spark plug out and that had the same colour but none of the wetness or oil. But this might be a read herring as the tip
  4. My problem is similar to someone elses recent post. One of the cylinders is misfiring. Since the coil pack and leads and spark plugs have been replaced the most likely candidates are: 1. Injector 2. Wiring to ECU 3. ECU I do have a spare ECU but don't want to disturb the one in the car and I think an ECU fault so it only misfires on one cylinder seems unlikley. I think the next step is to swap injectors between the bad cylinder and a good cylinder. BTW: compression check was good, varied between 150 -> 160
  5. Is it going to damage the coil pack if I run the engine with one ignition lead disconnected? Presumably a big spark would jump out the coil pack looking for an earth? Sounds dodgy. My other question is to do with reaching the fuel rail. Can I get access to disconnect any of the electrical plugs to the injectors without removing the upper air intake manifold?
  6. Is it possible to do anything to improve the range of the signal so I don't have to be standing next to the car when operating the keyfob? I put a new battery in the fob but I have to wave the fob around whilst repeatedly pushing the button to get the activate/deactivate the system. I've no idea where the receving antenna is. Also I have found a proximity sensor around the back of the dashboard. It has an LED on it but I've no idea what that does.
  7. Had a look, turns out it has only been running on 5 cylinders!!! Replaced the blacked up spark plug but now its misfiring on that cylinder so I'm going to get the coil pack checked.
  8. Does anyone know how much back pressure you lose when you replace the cat with a decat pipe on an otherwise standard system.
  9. Is the sunroof drain grommet the one right above where the wiring from the door enters the car? Thats so badly placed as the water is draining out the grommet and then into my car through the electrical wiring. I was thinking extending the drain would be easier than trying to seal the electricals entering into the car.
  10. HI, on the drivers side of my mk3 golf, water is running in through the rubber bellows that goes from the door to the body. The bellows looks seated properly but its the bulkhead drain pipe runs onto the bellows and thats how the water gets in. This must be a common problem, anyone got a solution? If the drain pipe was longer then the water would not run onto the bellows. The passanger side is fine.
  11. Hi, its a 94 Golf, an OBD1 model, I replaced the coil pack a couple of weeks ago, but for the past few months I've always noticed the smell of petrol until the engine has got to operating temperature, so looks like a rich mixture? The engine doesn't stall, it runs fine just strong smell of petrol. There is no petrol smell if you do a warm start. The lamda sensor was replaced in December. Is the best bet to get someone to do engine diagnostics on it? Also, is there an engine management light on the dash? The instruction book doesn't show one in the warning lamps section, how would you know if
  12. My situation is this: a set of four toyo proxies will be about 300 quid, but is there a complete tyre wheel package for about the same price around the 300-400 mark? Halfords probably isn't the best place but they had some resonable looking prices. Ideally I want to stay close to the 205/50 profile. Apparantly DTM split rims are the ones to look for? The other advantage is I can put the original wheel set back on when it eventually moves onto a new owner and then sell off the other wheels seperatly.
  13. looks like a fat allen key will do the trick.
  14. I want to lift the drivers carpet as the sound material in the footwell is wet from a water matrix leak. I've removed the trim by the sill but how do I remove that piece of trim with the bonnet catch in it? Theres a screw by the bonnet release catch and I can see theres some kind of screw where the accelerator pedal comes down as well but don't know what that is exactly.
  15. ok, just ordered the special tool VS529.
  16. Have any of you had troubles with the ignition lead snapping at the connector to the spark plug? Its cylinder 5 on the exhaust side, looks like a pain to extract.
  17. How much did you pay for your kit. They are 270 quid new? I'd be keen to get hold of a second hand set of eibach bars.
  18. yeah that worked fine. Turns out the reflector is shaking around inside the drivers light.
  19. I want to remove the drivers side headlight, how do you get the bottom piece of the front grille off? I have unclipped the top part but can't figure out the rest. I don't want to snap any clips. Also is it normal to have condensation inside the headlight lens?
  20. Hi, yes thats the number I read - after brushing away the leaves under that cowling.
