  1. Other things to check - seal on the expansion tank cap. If this poor, water can blow past and escape. Also check the secondary circulation pump is working properly. You should hear this whirring after the engine is turned off. If it isn't and could be seized this will cause overheating. Obviously the "garage" doesn't know that a VR6 has a timing chain

  3. North Yorks Moors would be good, lovely sweeping road between Pickering - Whitby plus a couple of technical hairpins. Decent pubs en-route or else unbeatable fish & chips at Whitby. Not too far for Tyne/Tees contingent either. Nick
  4. Golf engines changed to a top simplex chain after engine no. AAA217001. I think this also marked the change to OBD II diagnostics. There is an OBD guide on vr6oc site. You should be able to get an idea from this what sort of engine you have. Good luck Nick
  5. Zed, This is very relevent for high mileage VR's. My tensioner disintegrated at 144K and chewed the belt. Main dealer diagnosed problem as being air con compressor and wanted to relieve me of 1700 quid to fix it !! I replaced the tensioner for 120 quid. Spot the difference! Nick
