  1. If I close the door and hold the key everything closes. I don't think it should need to be plugged in to sort this out; it just goes to show that the dealer is more than happy to charge for something that does not need doing. I spoke to my local VW independent and he said he had a few cars with similar problems after disconnecting power to the motor.
  2. The replacement was identical including part numbers. Spoke to the local stealer and he said it was a quite common problem when replacing motors. He said the car needs to be plugged in and reset. I am not quite sure I need to spend 50 quid to sort the problem.
  3. This is same problem I had until I replaced the motor & regulator. The issue is age, the cables which operate the window lose their grease and become more difficult for the motor to move. This starts with the window slowing down and then the anti-trap starts to cut in because it thinks it has an obstruction. You can cure the problem in three ways. The first is to lubricate to rubber window runners (spray inside with silicone) but this is only a short term solution. The second is to take the door apart and lubricate the wires and motor. To do this properly you need to take the motor cover o

  5. Gave the window a go today and it didn't fix the problem. I can hear the motor disengage but still does not go up with one push. Anybody have any ideas? Cheers
  6. Thank-you very much; I will give it a go this evening. It's so funny how the small things are the most irritating! Cheers
  7. Could somebody please help with this problem. I replaced the drivers side electric window motor and regulator. Everything is working great except the one touch closing has stopped working. It goes down with one touch but not back up - you have to keep your finger on the button. I remember reading somwhere that they need reprogramming if they are disconnected. How do I do this? Cheers guys.
  8. I understand your comments about the handling, but in all honesty a lot of the problem is to do with a heavy engine up front. VR6's are not well balanced front to rear (compare the size of brake discs front to back) and because of this when you enter a corner the weight transfer to the front is just too great to make it a great handling FWD car. You mention your mates 306, but that is relatively light four pot engine in a chassis which is known for lift off oversteer (same as the old 205 1.9's). You could stiffen up the suspension to ease the weight trasfer, but the trade off against ride qual
  9. Thanks for your input guys. In addition to my earlier post I found out that the missus had put 95 petrol in it a couple of days earlier. That does not help. I filled her up with optima and found a 182 sport Clio who was just asking for it. All told it was a pretty good match, he was slightly quicker low down and I started to pull away @ 100. Made me feel better after the MK4 incident
  10. I have a mk3 VR6 and had a bit of blast with a MK4 GTI a couple of days ago. I always throught my VR6 was pretty quick, it leaves a lot of things (16v clios etc) for dead, but I could not keep up with this MK4. I don't think it is modded as I had a similar situation with another MK4 recently. Please tell me, are MK4 GTI's that quick and if so what do I need to do to be able to sit on his bumper. Oh by the way, even at 80 onwards it would still pull away (not a huge amount but enough to pee me off) ~
  11. I have a standard 96 VR6 which has covered 72k. I have had plenty of Golfs before but have never had one which seems so heavy (aircon adding bit more) and picks up every bump, cats eye and drain cover. The suspension is not too hard (had a Boge set up on a MK1,now that was hard!) it just crash's over everything. In addition when I first had it serviced they replaced the rear bumpstops which made it a bit better but if I go over a speedbump etc I still get a crashing noise from the back. Does this mean I need new trailing arm bushes? If so do I also need to do the front wishbones to make the wh
  12. Thanks for the response guys. I have had six different golfs now and all have suffered from some kind of gearbox problem. What should I do now, leave it and hope it doesn't implode or look to get it recon while it is intact. acf8181 - the noise is apparantly a slight rough noise coming from the diff.
  13. I have just had my 96 VR6(60k) in garage with a noisy front wheel bearing. Whilst the gargage was spining the wheels by hand on the ramp they picked up a noise coming from the gearbox. They checked the oil and it was fine. The car drives well with the exception of the wheel bearing. Has anybody come across something similar?
  14. I am new on here, so a big hello to all of you fellow VR6er's. I have followed this board since last May when I got my green 96 VR golf and is now a must read every lunch time. Right, to cut to chase, I have problem which has started over the last two weeks. Sometimes when I come up to a junction, put it in first gear, go to pull away I get no power. The revs climb very slowly, but it is not missing. when it gets to 3k it clears a bit but still is scary experience. If I pull the clutch in, it idles fine. The only way to get back to normal is turn it off and start it again, after that it goes b
  15. Hi, I am new on here but think I might have the answer. I Had the same problem with my 96 golf and after some careful thought worked out that the motor thinks there is an obstruction and keeps winding back down. So, I got some silicone spray (amour all etc) and sprayed it down the runners either side of window when the window was down and viola it stopped for about three months. I think the permenent solution is to take the door apart and re-grease window mech, but I don't know how the door panel comes off !!
