Yes, my mate had exactly the same problem and as soon as i took off the lower dash plastics under the steering column it fired into life. It was the plastics disconecting the module for the chipped key.

Yeah sonds like the alarm to me. Do you have one of the old VW alarms in it? Does it have a key fob with only one button on it and that can also be pluged into a socket to overide it?

Good stuff Kev, Interested in how your downpipe is coming along. How close is it going to be to your ABS controler and brake pipes. Im thinking about rerouting most of the pipes higher up in the bay to avoid heat build up. Good luck.
