    No numbers on the alarm. But it is rectangular and has two black buttons (no red), if that helps identify it. Would have been fitted late 96/early 97.

    I have a similar problem. The spare fob has not been used for a long time and has lost its code. I thought it would be a straightforward job to get the dealer to recode it, but apparantly not (is it ever!). Because it is a Thatcham 1, the control unit and the fob need to be sent back to Scorpian. The problem is finding the control unit. The most likely place is on the passenger side bulkhead, but this involve removing the passenger airbag and half the trim - £110 + vat, plus the cost of recoding, plus they need the car for at least a day! I really must get the spare working - the consequences

    I have used Halfords fully synthetic 5-40 for a while now. It has a good spec, costs less than £30 per 5 litres but is often on special offer (ie buy one get one free). Can't see the point in anything more exotic unless your engine is *very* highly tuned.

    215*40 are spec'd for 16's, so 225 should fit the wheel arches as they are not that bigger. You may be right that 215*45 are right for 15's - I will check with my tyre dealer. Tread is only important in wet (hence use of slicks on a dry track). Most times you don't want the rear to let go before the front so put the best tread on the rear. Doesn't matter that its FWD.

    I think that 225 are listed as an alternative standard spec in the handbook. By all means check with your local tyre dealer but 225X45 will give same rr as 205x50. Like many other owners, I eventually ran 225x45x16s on my Fiat coupe (falkens) instead of 205x50x16 as the bigger size was actually spec'd by Fiat on the last models made. Looked better and performed v. well. At the moment my VR has nearly new Goodyear 205s but as soon as the fronts are trashed I will put new 225s on the rear and eventually all round - remember, always put best tyres on rear.

    You could be right. I had new top mounts fitted (even though the car has only done just over 30K) so the whole lot proably needs to settle in. I give it a few more miles and see what happens.

    225 x 45 is a better choice IMO. That's what I'm going for next.

    Koni kit now fitted (on softest setting) and what an improvement! The car now goes round corners just like it should and the ride is nicely firm but not too harsh . Why weren't these (or similar) fitted as standard by VW? One slight problem is that the springs creak and groan a bit - noticable when manouvering at slow speed. It is possible that they are moving in the housings, so it will go have to back on the ramps to investigate as soon as it is back from the paint shop this week.

    Thanks for all the advice, which I will discuss with my mates at ABP Motorsport. I will most likely go for the softest settings for now. I wan't to keep what few fillings a year with the Fiat Coupe has left me! Next off is sorting out the engine department - the ride I can live without, but I'm badly missing the Fiat's 250bhp!

    I'm having the Koni suspension kit fitted later this month. This gives a modest 30mm lowering (hopefully not affecting ride quality too much). Fronts are top adjustable but rear only off the car, so I need to get the setting more or less right from the start. Anyone got any experience of this kit?

    My P plate has done only 32K (though now rising fast as I'm using it to commute for the first time). Old MOTs will show millage at each year, and if it has been serviced by any reputable dealer (VW or otherwise) they should have a record on computer. Check for repacement pedal rubbers - usually a sure sign of a clocked car.
