zedvr6 0
Hi, just purchased a 1997 vr6 with 65k miles on the clock and fvwsh. The car is fast and pulls like a train in all gears. However i have heard a light sort of shimmering / rattle noise under hard acceleration or when revving the car when standing still.Anything to worry about? The car was last serviced by vw at 61k miles. mk3anni 0
ErrrrrI'd say chains, but unlikely at that mileage.Could be the aux belt tentioner I guess?
zedvr6 0
Could this mean the belt is too tight?
Seademon 0
no more than likely that the tensioner is knackered - not a big job really. Best to get the whole car checked over at a specialist just to be on the safe side.
zedvr6 0
Sorry about all the quastions but never had a vr6 before.Exactly which tensioner needs changing???
mk3anni 0
left hand side of the engine there's an auto tensioner at the top of the engine towards the front of the car.
clarkie 1
i would say the cam chain tensioner. the bold one that bolts through the head. it orks on hydrolic pressure and if the rubber is nackered it will lose until the car starts to fill it back up with oil. that is what was wrong with mine. does it also rattle if you hold it at about 1000 rpm??? zedvr6 0
If it is the cam chain tensioner is this part easy to fit and where is it located?
matth76 1
Could it just be noisy tappets? Most VR's suffer from noisy tappets.
zedvr6 0
Well what i will probably do is change the belt tensioner and do an oil and filter change on the car. If the noise is still there then i assume it must be the timing chain tensioner.Anyone know how easy or difficult it is to change the timing chain tensioner?
