Since the light came on i personaly find my brakes respond much better to my input,i know exactly what the brakes are doing and no interference by the ABS.

I understand the plus point of ABS but surely they have been around long enought not to be costing £500 + from the stealers.

1) Do mot testers test the operation of ABS on the brake test ?

2) Do i have to have ABS ?

Now where is my solderind iron to bridge the ABS light to the Airbag light.........

1) Yes and no. The ABS itself is not tested, but if the ABS light doesn't come on, or comes on and stays on, then it's an MOT fail.

2) It is possible to remove the ABS system on a Mk3 - it is not tied into the engine management like on the Mk4 & Mk5, however, almost all of the brake lines on the car need to be changed to remove the ABS and the cost of doing this will be more than what it would cost to fix your ABS problem.

The problem might just be a wheel sensor or brake position sensor and these are cheap to replace. Get your fault codes read to see whether this is the case. Even in the case of an ABS pump or ECU failure, you can use second hand parts as long as the part numbers match what's on your car.

It is possible to use the airbag light as a "workaround" for the MOT to buy yourself more time to get the problem fixed. No need for a soldering iron - just pull the PCB off the back of the dash panel and poke the airbag bulb through the hole for the ABS light, tape it up and off you go!! The airbag light is not checked on an MOT.
