Hi James

A later VR6 (1996 onwards to be sure of getting an "OBD2" - this is a later golf with a better ecu and a bit more power - ~185bhp - than the earlier models which have ~174bhp) is a good starting point if you want close to 200 bhp. To get close to the 200 mark you need a cat back stainles exhaust and ideally a decat or high flow cat, and a good cold air induction kit. BMC are recommended on here. That will get you around 195-200bhp.

"Highline" is the same as a normal vr6 except it has a few extra 'cosmetic' options as standard inside the car such as leather seats and a few others (I'm some others will confirm all the other extras). However everything else under the bonnet/powerwise is exactly the same.

Reliability wise they should be very strong cars, far better than a lot of modern main stream cars these days. Just make sure they have a full service history (vital) and regular oil changes every 10000 miles or every 12 months, ideally by a vr6 or german sports car specialist as opposed to main dealers. These are far far more experienced and will know the ins and outs of the vr (and are half the price of main dealers). Very good thing to do is actually ring up the garage that has serviced the car you are looking at and find out what their opinion of it is and what kind of work will likely need doing in the near future. If its mileage is over 100k you need to bear in mind the timing chains may need doing (if they haven't been), however sometimes they last till 200k miles. You should be able to find a good example, ~70k miles, fsh, for around the £3k mark. Good luck.
