What to look out for on a 96 sharan vr6

Recommended Posts

Ive just bought a sharan vr6 96 from a dealer I havent picked it up yet but when seeing it, it looked in very good condition with 83000 on the clock.Ive seen lots theads on various forums regarding cylinder head gasket faults and now Im panicing !! Ive done quite a lot of work on Fords and Vauxhalls engine changes etc but know very little about the vr6 engine. Before i drive out the showroom I want to be sure there not selling me a car with a blown head gasket what signs should I be looking for? any help would be great.cheers *-)

oil in the coolant

alot of blue or white smoke out of the exhaust

do a compession test

oil in the coolant is not allways the cylinderhead gasket on a vr, if the oil cooler is leaking internaly, it can make it appear as if the head gasket is blown.

they dont normaly go and the engines are mechanicaly very reliable if serviced regularly

a warped head is more usually due to a coolant system fault

or incorrect installation of the head

83000 is nowt for a vr6 engine if looked after, i stripped my 116000 mile engine to fit forged pistond and there was hardly a ridge worn in the cylinder wall

i hope it all goes well for you
