Brake discs 280 mm versus 288 mm

Recommended Posts

I bought some 288 mm discs sometime ago, not checking what I have fitted, and have now come to fit them. Unfortunately my VR6 has 280 mm discs fitted, so the 288 mm won’t fit.

So what are my options?

I can try and force them in by machining the inside of the calipers down by 4 mm, and widening the brake pad holders by 2 mm either side. I’ll also have to machine the top of the brake pad holder out by 4mm. This seems like a lot of effort, and I may weaken the whole front end braking system. I’m not really keen on this approach.

Or can I fit the 288 mm caliper system to my front end? Will it fit, or can I fit something more substantial, like something off a later/newer Golf?

I’ve got 17inch rims fitted at present.

Any help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

Just buy some 288 calipers and carriers off ebay. I picked up some 288 calipers, carriers, pads, hoses and disks for £45. The 288s just bolt straight on but the hoses are different than 280 hoses as they have a banjo fitting on the caliper end.
