djbigpete 0
After driving behind a car that was driving along the very edge of a dual carriageway (where the surface is looser) and was therefore chucking up a lot of stones, i noticed that the bonnet and wings now have quite a few stone chips on which show up as the car is flash red. I was wondering if people had any advice on removing stone chips without any respraying. I've asked the guy at the body shop what he can do about it and he says he can touch them in then flat and polish it. He says he'll do all the chips on the car for about £70. Does anyone know what sort of finish this will leave and if this is a good price?Cheers, Pete.
SankysVR6 1
If you do it yourself, you will have to clean the chip out fill it with paint, i find a tooh pick good for this. And then let it dry for a couple of days.Rub it down using some mild rubbing compound G3 or something untill the stonechip is flat with the rest of the paint around it.Apply a ploish of your choice and buff it up to nice shine. But to be honest £70 isn't much, and i would personaly give it to the body shop to do. As they'll have all the gear and might get better results
vdubgirl 3
Sankys given you the answer to stone chip repair above, I use a needle instead of a cocktail stick though.Unfortunately Stone chips are the bain of most of our lives. When I first got My VR it had a million stone chips so i got a full front end respray done for about £250 which then showed up how bad the rest of the car was lol. I've since had a complete rebuild and respray done to my car but I've picked up about 10 chips and a fair few scratches since I've had the car back from the early part of this year.My bonnet has a million coats of paint and laquer and alot of harnder was used in it to help protect it and that does seem to work.My bumper however has taken a battering but this is because its been smoothed - Which is one of the downsides to having this mod done! £70 sounds ok for repair work and places like chips away etc can do an excellent job in little or no time at all.You could use a bonnet bra but i've heard things like they do more harm than good and can damage the areas around the bonnet where they rub! :-(
djbigpete 0
Thanks for the advice guys. I've booked the car into the body shop on Wednesday for the stone chips and to have a rust spot under the rubber seal at the bottom of the drivers door cut out and welded, wax oiled etc. Is the stone chip solution likely to bring the area back to anywhere near original paint quality (will they be noticable) or is this only achievable with some respraying? Snedboy 0
Vdubgirl using alot of hardner in the laquer causes it to be tougher yes,but prone to chipping alot easier.Best solution againt stone chips on the front end is to add flexibilizer to the laquer and basically stones then bounce of kinda. Also with extra hardener in laquer it tends to make it go milky coloured after too much sunlight. And in respect of the original thread as sanky said get them to do it coz they aint chargin alot of money and will prob do a better job than you would.
