Coilovers compared to spring/shock combo- which lasts longer

Recommended Posts

depends what car theyre on? and what make, and where and how its driven and who by! i have had kits on my cars, both coilovers and spring & shock combos that have lasted ages, just depends on use, that said.. i had an AVO coilover kit on my Rallye to start with and it was Utter Shite!! changed it to H&R and it was superb again. just buy the best kit you can afford, the FK coilover kits are very good value and quality imo, and Koni shocks with Eibach springs are what most people go for on seperate set ups.

I only use my car as a daily driver to and from work... no track day use. So don't want to spend a fortune but do want my car lowered so it "looks lowered" and also handles better... but more important than anything else is I want a kit that will last at least as long as standard suspension. What I really need to know is how an equally good set of spring/shocks will last compared to an equally good set of coilovers - example, koni shocks/springs, compared to Koni coilovers etc. Do coilovers last longer normally?

I know spring shock combos are extremely good at improving the handling but all the spring/shocks combos only seem to lower the golf VR6 a max of 35mm... in fact most are only 25-30mm. I also want to go for looks as well as improving the handling...hence I was thinking about coilovers as the only option. The cheapest I have see are FK AK coilovers for under £300(!) but I have see literally no-one with these, and equally I have seen hardly anyone with the next FK brand up: Highsports, which are around £380. Then it gets more expensive with FK Konigsports starting close to £500. Not sure what any of these makes go in a group buy but they are very expensive to start with - however IF coilovers are going to last much longer than an equally good spring shock set up then I will go for coilovers.

The coilovers I was thinking about getting were the Highsports as I have (I can't remember exactly) I think seen them on sale for £320ish in a group buy.

Ideally my head says go for the Konigsports (even though they are much more expensive and I don't use my car for track days etc) but it's the fact they will last far longer - HOWEVER is this true - will they last much longer than Highsports??

Who here has the FK Konigsports, and how long have you had them?

Who here has the FK Highsports, and how long have you had them?

And are there any other brands to consider that don't cost too much?

Cheers for any help.

I have FK Highsports on my Highline, been on for around a year.. they are very good quality ride and handling imo, and of course being coilovers you can get the height you want in 30 minutes if you want to change it! the Konigsports are obviously that much more expensive as the materials are slightly higher quality, that said i would think they would last the same amount of time? its impossible to answer really as a shock can fail at any time for many reasons. my H&R Kit was still going strong on my Rallye after 5 years!

I'de personally go for the coilies imo.

Once i fitted them to mine i noticed the instant reaction my steering had due to less movement of the springs/struts i.e not a big spring platform to turn but a smaller area.

I've fitted a Spax MK3 VR6 kit to mine cause of the heavier spring rates needed.

Shop around m8 coz i foned a place advertising Koni Coilovers at £850 and when i asked them about them they said yeah weve got them here.Do u them for £540!!!!

Good luck with the shoppin !amazed
