I need to remove my starter motor so that I can replace the earth strap. (Stealth said I would need to replace the starter at £120 +vat+fitting, so DIY fixing the existing has got to be worth it)

I need to know whats involved in removing it (starter), in particular - do I need to remove anything else to get to it?

I know the engine needs supporting - Is a trolley jack + block of wood under the sump ok, or will it bend the sump?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can you take a photo of where its located etc? as I can't see why the engine needs supported whilst the starter is removed, the whole unit must weigh only 4-5 kilo if that therefore is not gonna make the engine fallout, not only that but on my car (Passat) the starter is located just in front of the radiator fan motor, on top of the gearbox, to the right of the Block, therefore access should be fairly easy and it is only bolted in by the maximum of three bolts. I presume you are talking about the earth strap from the solonoid to the starter motor?? A GSF starter is only £86 therfore may be an easier option that having to fabricate a new strap + it would have 12 months warranty.

I had the same problem with my starter motor, ended up getting a friend who works for a generator company to sort the earth strap out. Did this after I replaced mine with a 2nd hand one though! Doh!

I believe there is a plastic cover over the starter of some sorts. Not to sure as I didnt replace mine myself and I havnt got my Bentley manual here at work. Will have a look later.

28v6r - the engine needs to be supported as I found out that the bolts which hold the starter in place also go through an engine mount.

VR6Rich - I have a Bently manual as well, but it isnt exactly clear. I cant make head nor tail of the diagrams!

Did this job on my brother's VR a few months back. I supported the engine with a trolley jack on the bit where the gearbox bellhousing meets the engine. Also, I had to take the front of the car off to get good access to the starter. Other than that, it was an easy enough job. Took about 2 hours to do.
