Basically it's impossible unfortunately to remove the top chain without removing the gearbox - even if you take of the head of the engine. However timing chain rattle can sometimes be because you have a faulty top tensioner bolt (also called hydraulic tensioner bolt). If this is replaced it could fix the problem. This is because when the bolt becomes faulty it is not pressing the top tensioner hard enough into the chain making the chain become loose - hence the rattle. My recommendation is you get the bolt replaced or looked at... by a good specialist. Could save you a lot of money.

Cheers

if your car is pre 95 and done around 100k it will prob need tensioners and chains if it is newer than this it could be just top bolt tensioner as the updated tensioners on later cars are a lot stronger than the earlier models and as matth 76 said only top tensioner bolt can be replaced without removing gbox for all other tensioner work box must come off.Carl(stoke vw spares)

Bumping up an old thread rather than starting a new one.

My car is a '97 on a R so its OBD2 with 120k. Its got a slight rattle when cold at about 1200 revs. Would replacing the tensioner sort it, or is it best to replace the chain aswel?

Thanks
