Who uses 5/40 oil in their VR6?

hi, my mechanic told me that the best oil to use in the VR6 is 5/40 - is this correct? i know this topic might have been discussed before but i am just looking for a quick answer (not long winded debate we like getting into lol)

i ask this as my new engine is being delivered and i will have to service it straight away. i have halfords vw502.00 approved oil at home 5/40.

i think most people use 10w 40 quantum synta silver, euro car parts do some good deals on it

yeh , upto now i used 10/40 but iv been led to believe 5/40 has less hesitation in engine movement

I use Synta Gold fully synthetic 5W-40 in my engine and it works lovely.

fully synthetic is v good oil, sometimes it can be a bit thin on higher mileage engines, can also get past old oil seals if its not been run on synthetic from new or recently rebuilt

Nick's right, there have been a few discussion on this. Try searching under 'oil' or 'which oil'. I have used Synta Silver and have found it to work well.

most oil manufacturer's seem to recommend 10/40 so i ve always stuck with that.

Agreed, 10W/40 semi synthetic is a safe choice.

Synta gold is a bit thin really. The vr6 just burns it and it makes the engine sound very rattley. 10w 40 or 10/15w 50 would be ideal if it was readily available.
