Right, some of you may remember my ongoing clunk problem form a few months back.

The final diagnosis was that it was the diff everso slightly moving (about 1 or 2mm) which was making the noise.

I got a quote to fix the gearbox, fit new clutch etc of well over a grand and was wondering what options I would have to upgarde parts for future benfit.

So thems the questions (as the knock pi$$es me off more and more each day) what options have I got for upgrading the gearbox and diff?

cool cheers. Is that just the gearbox then?

I must admit i'm not hugely sure what the diff is....bit mechanically stoopid i'm afraid.

I was quoted for the gearbox to be reconditioned so is the diff actually part of the gearbox. It must stick out of the box in order for them have found the bit that moved which made the clunk.

I hear people talk about limited slip diffs and quaiffe stuff, what are these...are they part of/replacing the gearbox or can they be used in conjunction with a standard gearbox?

The diff just transfers the power to the wheels.... if you get a uprated diff you will notice....(just imagine at the lights you put your foot down the power dose not go equally to the driven wheels its thrown back and forth between the two) on an uprated diff this is more pronounced...dnt quote me on this its wot i understand from reading articles.... the clonkin may well be diff....or planetary bearings....just get a reconitem it will save you hassel n you'l get a waranty.....try VW SANDBURNS.....they usually come up trumps with quality used part and resonably priced to......

i'm also looking to upgrade my gearbox, any 1 know if the seat 6 speed is compatible? i'm sure i read somewhere that it had been done...?

either that or a quaiffe 6 speed for 2k. 6 gears has to be the way forward though, especially for motorway driving!

One thing you can do is fit a lower final drive from a Corrado G60. it's 3.68 compared to the VR's taller 3.39. In short it gives you better acceleration.

I had a full rebuild done at stealth and added the aforementioned shorter crownwheel and a quaife LSD. It's simply stunning, the quality of Vince's rebuilds are second to none, he used to work for Gemini gearboxes in his early days, so knows them like the back of his hand.

The improved acceleration is very noticable in 5th, you no longer need to drop to 4th at 70mph to get the engine into the 4000rpm power band. It's not crazy low, 4000rpm gives 90mph instead of 100. The standard ratio is too tall imo.

It also affects my charger spool up, it comes in earlier than a standard geared VR so I just tend to waft around in 4th and 5th all day :-)

The quaife is an awesome device. In a straight line you have a 50/50 split and traction off the line is massively improved, especially in the wet....but it's the cornering that improves the most. Up to 85% of the torque is transferred to the outside wheel when the inside wheel starts to slip and it does it totally seemlessly and smoothly. It literally slingshots you round the corner. It's a very bizarre experience at first but one you will get to love very quickly.

I paid
