H/G or oil cooler?

hi all, with a combination of a little sludge in the oil and murky coolant in the reservoir, could that point to oil cooler failing rather than head gasket going?

The only way you will find out is by proper drop down tests/co2 tests.

there is a special headgasket test kit that you can get, it has a dye in it and if the headgasket is gone then the dye changes colour. something like that.

That sounds like crack testing dye, more for checking for cracks in heads/blocks etc once off car.

There used to be a smoke liquid that you added to your coolant which produced abundant white smoke if burned (by leaking into a cylinder). Not seen it for years, either because I haven't been looking, or maybe it was not very enviromentaly friendly. You need to flush your coolant after using it though if you do find it.
