I have finished the running gear and today dicided to start on the engine as it is not a quick as it should be,I have done the plugs ,leads ,coil pack etc.

I cleaned the hall sender thanks to Nerih's post,

Right the problem I have is sometimes when I slow for a junction the rpm drops to 400 then come back up straight away I had the bonnet open today and could hear air sucking /blowing from near the throttle body I have checked all the pipes and cannot find a leak, when I pulled back the throttle from under the bonnet it sounds as if there is no air filter, next to the airbox there is a small pipe with a sensor in it that is ticking away like crazy(is this normal).

The engine seem to lack power unless I drive it realy hard and fuel consumption is a joke.

I took the plugs off the sensors to check for a good conection and so on also took the pipes off to check for splits,I had the battery disconected as well while doing this so it would reset, when I put everything back together it would not tick over at all I put my foot on the throttle and reved a couple of time then it seemed OK,I then went out and 3 times it stalled on me(auto box) I stopped where I had to go for 10 mins and when I started it it drove home fine except the sound of to much air.

Anyone got any idea's what the problem could be as any help would be great. ?!

i ve got a similar problem, when i let the rpm drop it fall down to about 400rpm, and pick up again. doesnt do it very often tho. on the rear occasion it will die but starts straight away.

noticed it does it when i hold the engine in 5th gear, brake and let it pull the rpm down to about 1000rpm then dip the clutch and the engine will almost stop!

i ve put mine down to a faulty engine speed sensor, idle is rough, it tends "chug" when going slowly. i ll get a new sensor and see what happens.

i ve read fault finding tips that suggest faulty fuel pumps and knackered fuel pressure regulaters can give similar problems and poor fuel economy.

Sorry if this sounds a little too simple guys but could it be the throttle body? Mine was doinf the same a few months back and still does occasionaly until I take a clean rag and some carb cleaner to the intake. I havn't removed the TB (I don;t have the time) but a quick clean inside every now and then seems to do the trick. Mine's an ODB2 so no ISV.

Yep, clean ISV, but it could also be TB butterfly sticking if it is happening at very low revs. Taking off TB is really easy and quick: Onlt four allen haed cap screws to unbolt. Disconnect throttle cable (oh, it's OBD2 tho?) anyway, undo the four bolts and you should be able to manouvre the TB enough to clean the inside. Concentrate on the povit part of the butterfly and the point at which the perimeter of the butterfly seals withing the TB. made the world of difference to my car (OBD1).

mines an obd1, so i ll definately be giving that a go!!

what is the small plastic case for, beside the TB, 2 big rubber pipes attached and a small 1 branching off going to the intake pipe. theres a loud sucking noise coming from there on mine, pulled 1 of the big pipes off, car started fine but would not idle. is there any thing inside that plastic case that could malfunction?

Ok thanks for advice so far but what I think I need to do is understand what dose what on the air sytem,I do know what a lot of the stuff is but lets pretend I'm thick %-6

What is the job of the maf and all the other sensors that are on the air /fuel system, the one that is ticking is from the oil breather, what is that for, also when I unplug some sensors including the mass air it dose not seem to make any difference to the way the car ticks over,

Last thing dose Elsa win or Bently explain how thing work or are they just repair information.

The little valve on the oil breather (PCV) that's ticking? it's meant to, it's controlling the amount crank case fumes that get sucked back through the engine and stops flash backs in the event of a backfire! unplugging the MAF wont upset the tick over, the PCM registers a fault and drops back to a preset set of parameters, limp home mode! air intake noise? check the PCV these are known to tear!

the tickover problem could be a faulty throttle body sensor or dodgy connector/loom you did say you unplugged it, you mave have disturbed it?

AND FOR YOUR INFO GOD DOES DRIVE A VR6 GALAXY !alien

I had exactlyu the same problem... dip the clutch while braking, revs get down to bout 1000 rpm, engine stalls. I had the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel pump all replaced, no joy. In the end it was the engine speed sensor that was fooked, got all the work done at a garage, cost a lot of money in labour before fault was eventually found. !sad

Well what do you know ti was the PCV not seated right ,I had to take all the engine top covers becouse my hoses arrived from Germany today so had to take that stuff off to replace the hoses and while it was easy to see I checked the PCV as Alanf said and it was only just on,I must have dislodged it whilst doing somthing else,I have most of those new sensors so will change them all lol!!.I have a big box of old but not broke bits becouse I fancied putting new ones on cost me the best part of
