VR6 questions and what to look for

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm just starting to look around for a VR6, I expect the insurance money from somebody hitting my car will come through in a couple of weeks.

I have a few questions about cars with milage on them and general longevity etc;

I'm aiming for a highline around 96/97 because I'd like the aircon and leather. In another thread someone mentioned that it might be better buying one with 140k on it rather than a 70-80k one.

On that note:

1. What sort of milage is the VR6 good for, i.e. is 100k+ just run in?

2. The mk3 as a whole, does it stay sharp and solid (new feeling) still up around that sort of milage?

I know the standard shocks aren't great and it gets a bit sloppy with age but is easily fixed, I mean more on the body and overall build.

3. Am I better looking for a lower milage one, or is higher absolutely no issue? I had in mind a maximum of 95k on a 96/97 plater.

4. Any other advice?

imo any car over 5 years old .you sould look at the car condtion and not just miles ,just cos a car has high miles doesnt mean it worn out,if it been cared for properly sould be fine,doing lots of miles on motorway in a vr6 wil not wear it out like using round town ,stop starts and traffic light GPs will

I bought a standard, 97 plate with 65k & full VAG service history (which actually doesn't count for much, as you will soon find out) You can never really guage the true past lifestyle of a car but the sensible checks around the body's nooks and crannies, the engine bay, oil filler cap, interior etc. should give you a clue as to whether the car was loved or abused. I change my oil and filter every 5/6k and full service every year also. The car's now on 80k and better than ever. She feels much smoother, feels more responsive, more powerful etc. My feeling is that properly cared for they get better with age. There's a guide somewhere on this site (sorry, not sure where) which covers this topic. Have a look around. Best of luck.
