FishWick 21
The 312 setup is only 2Kg per side heavier than the 280 stuff. If you've got 17s and 312s, it's a lot of mass for the driveshafts to initiall spin up but as said already the pros outweigh the cons.I didn't notice any reduction in ride quality when going from 288s to 312s. rs1800gr4 0
I've fitted them to my mk3 vr6 two years ago behind BBS RS 16'S and they look and do the job perfect.
VR6Rich 3
If im going to fit TT calipers to my VR then what Goodridge hoses do I need? Ive heard there may be a difference in banjo bolt fittings between the 288mm VR calipers and TT calipers. Does that mean I need TT front brake lines and VR rear brake lines? mattverth 0
My 312's are still sitting in a box in the garage. I would like to separate the carriers and calipers to clean them up and spray them, but is it impossible to separate these two items whilst the brakes are off the car? What size is the required allen key for starters? - they're off an audi s3.CheersMatt
francisjonno 2
You should be able to separate the caliper and carrier off the car. Give the bolts a spray with wd40 (or similar) first to help losen them if they're a bit siezed. You'll need to find some way to firmly clamp the claiper/carrier while you undo the allen bolts.I'd recommend using allen sockets rather than keys, much easier to undo brake bolts with a bit more leverage (+ you can torque up the bolts afterwards) - i'm not sure of the allen size thou (i assume s3 size would be the same size as standard)

binliner 0
the bolt is 7mm but u dont need to undo it while theyre off the car they just pull apart!
VR6Rich 3
Bolts fix the carriers and calipers together though dont they? Id be a bit worried if they just pull apart without undoing the bolt!
badboyV6 4
You need to undo the bolts that are on each side of the caliper. Still need to get the bolt spacers for mine...
binliner 0
Theyre sliders.. if theyre off the car with no pads or disks in the way they can be slid off

Ive heard there may be a difference in banjo bolt fittings between the 288mm VR calipers and TT calipers. Does that mean I need TT front brake lines and VR rear brake lines? You need a Goodridge hose set for a 1996-onwards Golf VR6 (regardless of what year your car is). This will do both front & rear. You will also need the stock brake-line-to-front-caliper banjo bolts from the Audi TT Quattro/Audi S3/Golf 4Motion. With a bit of luck, you'll get these with your calipers. Otherwise, they are pretty cheap from a main dealer.

FishWick 21
Word of warning on the 312s.....don't use Audi discs! Mine warped after 3 months and I'm not even that heavy on the pedal. I've been running Brembo plain 312 discs and Pagid fast road Golf 288 pads for a few weeks now and it's a very good combo and £150 all in, so quite cheap. The Brembos come with replacement disc locating screws but they're too long, so you can't use them, you'll need shorter golf ones instead.
badboyV6 4
nice advice Kev... youve just persuaded me to go for the EBC jobbies... lol more expense

FishWick 21
I'm trying to see if I can get Brembo sportline discs (grooved or drilled) in floating flavour, i.e. an alloy bell instead of solid. This saves about 1.5Kg a corner of unsprung weight. I'm big into that. I've recently dumped my 17s in favour of light weight Vento VR6 Cup challenge 16" speedlines and fitted them with Uniroyal Rainsports, which are a very light tyre. The difference already is phenomenal. Everything is better....ride, turn-in, initial brake bite and handling. If I can get these floating discs, then the overall unsprung weight would be the same or less than the original 15" wheel and brake setup. Heavy brakes and wheels do the Corrado/MK3 no favours if you're into driving hard ;-)I would ideally like to fit Brembo GT junior 4 pots (or the full blooded Gran Turismo 8 pots), or AP Racings but they just cost stupid money. The Brembo calipers are approximately half the weight of the iron ATE 288/312 calipers!
ALean Mofo 0
Kev, i think those Vento VR6 Cup challenge look the nuts!!!Where can i find me a set But anyway, just to recap this massive thread, to fit 312mm Brakes to my 1997 Highline, i would need:312mm discs/pads (i'm very interested in the Brembo floating idea)TT Carrier6mm SpacerLonger Bolts?TT Banjo clipTT Back Plate (optional)Also prefereably some fresh fluid and Braided hoses.Have i missed anything? Except someone competent to fit them ALean
FishWick 21
Yep that's it! Cheers on the rims too mate. I don't know of any more sets unfortunately!Well, my braking plans have changed yet again..... this time I've gone balls out and bought the kit on the left! http://www.apracing.com/pics/04_brake_kit.jpgComplete kit - 4 pot calipers, alloy bells, 304x28 drilled rotors, hoses, ferodo DS2500 pads, litre of 5.1 fluid and some other bits n bobs....designed for the MK3/Corrado platform. The lower ball joint needs grinding slightly to clear the disc, but the good news is they will fit behind my speedlines with 3mm to spare, hurrah, no sodding spacers! ALean Mofo 0
Ok, i'm going to be thick here, whats a Banjo clip? Also, would the standard bolts fit? or would the spacing require longer bolts?I read a friend of Kev's on the Corrado board will make up a spacer (instead of washers) and the bolts, but are the bolts required on the later cars?CheersALean
VR6Rich 3
I think the banjo clip is the way the hose connects to the back of the caliper. The spacers that are made by the guy on the corrado forum are basically thick washers but are fine for the job. Both the longer bolts and thicker washers are needed whether you have a late car or not.
Matt W 4
OK so to confirm then you would only need the banjo clip if you are changing your calipers and brake lines i.e if you had 280mm brakes
mattverth 0
Kev, did you need spacers for the 312s and the 16 inch speedlines? I would have though the discs are in-board enough not to need them.
FishWick 21
Nope didn't need any wheel spacers, there's loads of clearance. The 312s give you 6mm extra clearance so should fit behind most 16s and 17s.
mattverth 0
The 312's are on and everything I hoped for and more. Event the splash guards fit and dont foul anything - one was rubbing and a gentle prise away and all is clear. Interestingly, my mechanic said the banjo bolts on the mk 3 hoses I had went straight into the audi s3 brakes that went on - same thread!I have greenstuff on there, which came with the purchase of the s3 brakes. The discs are plain, not grooved or slotted and around town that is a far better option for me - feels stock but STRONG stock. Someone pulled out in front of me at motorway speeds the other day and I gave the brake a firm push, not stamp of course - and the thing just wanted to stand on its nose - there really is no need for anything bigger or with more pots! However, I am a bit concerned about the brake bias - the front is obviously doing more of the work now and the rear gets a bit light under braking - even with decent coils to hold me down. Anyone have any thoughts on this - does the mk 4 rear brake upgrade help or not in this respect? There is heaps of room too, for a future planned set of 16's which I will keep to myself.....havent seen it done yet...anywhere....
