kevin285 1
hi Firstly I should say that I don't own a vr6 I am really hoping I've come across a friendly form where someone might be able to help me I've got a range rover classic where I've upgraded my alternator for all the electric gizmos I've got on it The alternator used in the vR6 golf Mark 3, corrado Is ideal for doing this as it doesn't need any change of the bracket on my car and easy to put in part number 021 903 025g I think it comes under other numbers as well. All working fine except that my tachometer isn't working but it should be. I am really hoping that someone with a bit of time and inclination could do a test for me- one of the single wires coming out of the alternator from the euro plug goes to the tachometer I believe that should be reading a voltage on tickeover, I think it should be around about 7 V Appreciate this post is very cheeky but I thought possibly this is the best place to try and get information I need is am struggling anywhere else. Hope the post isn't taking the Mickey and I really would appreciate any one who might be up to help me many thanks kevin Edited November 27, 2016 by kevin285 further info VR6Pete
Philly-R6 28
I think your tacho problem is unrelated to the alternator. The alternator is grounded through the engine and has a thick red wire connected to the battery. The third connection is a thin wire (might be blue) which drives the alternator light in the dash. If you get a good voltage with the engine running, the alternator is fine.
kevin285 1
hi thanks for reply yes alternator is ok charging at 14v at tickover the problem is the plug that sits proud on alternator the left connector is the battery light on dash - this shows 14v and battery light goes out on dash so know its charging. its the second of these connectors in this plug which i thought was the 'W' connector which is prior to rectifiers this should be putting ot 7vac not dc at tickover the tach reads frequency of the sine waves which gives speed alt. is turning and drives tach. mine is only showing 1.9vac so not sure if fault or it isnt w output hoping someone can pop voltmeter onto this connector set to ac and read volts. ita big favour esp in this cold weather if its not w output will have to solder one into alt-which trying to avoid thanks again kevin
