I have read a couple of threads on window problems and would like to share some experiences and ask for some help.

First my problem is related to a full closure alarm on my 95 golf. ALL windows and sunroof close and open normally using the internal switches...however when using the total closure alarm the sunroof stutters, sometimes doesn't close and the rear nearside window doesn't close at all. The rear also doesn't close when using the 'close/open all' key feature. So this means motors are alright but maybe wiring is loose? Answers on a post card plsease :)

Now for some info that I have gleaned over the years after replacing and fixing several of my window mechanisms. First if the wire loop feeding the slider in the doors make any sort of grinding sound at all its likely they are about to snap so replace the complete winder and slider mechanism. Personally I just spend the 70 odd quid at a VW garage. The motors are quite robust so don't buy one. Its a fiddle to replace but doesn't take that long.

If the mechanism is okay but the window doesn't respond the thing to check is that the peculiar connection from the wiring loom into the motor (locking slider moves in at 30 degree angle) is firmly pressed home. They sometimes vibrate loose. One other feature I have noticed is that the closed wire loop (through motor and slider mechanism) can become tensioned so that the window will not operate at all even though the motor and slider all look okay. This is where you have to release the slider mechanism by loosening (not removing) the 3 bolts that hold the slider in the door (yes removing door card etc is a pain) Wiggling the slider and then operating the window switch usually sorts that one out.

If you get genuine VW parts beware that there sre differences in the parts for different years. I got caught out once and had to re-rorder.

I had this problem with full closure alarm in that all windows worked wi5th switches and all windows and suroof opened with key and all closed apart from the drivers passenger window. Problem turned out to be broken wires in the loom that goes to the door.

Open the door with faulty window pull back the rubber sleeving and have a look at the wires .

does the sunroof open with the switch if it does but dosen't close with alarm then it might need the power close re-programming.

Try this if the problem is like above:-

switch on ignition lights (don't start the car) then open the sunroof fully with the switch and then close.Switch off ingnition and see if that helps.

Did you have broken wires for the windows and if so have you fixed them yet.

Thanks for the advice ...will try to have a go at the weekend. The windows and sunroof all work from the switches so I think the alarm closure is beginning to fail. It is 10 yrs old now and could prolly do with an overhaul. Was a decent CAT1 at the time but things have moved on.

Thanks for the offer of the wiring diags Scruffy...let me look at the Bentley manual first. Updates after the weekend :)
