MK3 Golf VR6 smoking

Hello, I recently purchased a vr6 and it runs fine, although I briefly had smoke come through my heater vents which smelt like burning plastic. I suspect it is my heater core but it doesn't always do this when the heater is on? Also, white steam/smoke comes from under the bonnet by the manifold which smells the same.

Could this just be a leaking part of my exhaust or definitely heater core?

have a look round the down pipe and manifolds to see if there is anything touching the exhaust

sound like your coolant hose may be leaking onto the exhaust as well
