whapstervr6 0
Hi,I am not really sure if I have a problem with my Sharan VR6, but I would need your professional opinion. I have a N Reg Sharan VR6 Carat, standard spec, no chips or tuning. The Watertemperatur gauge shows the temperature just above half on the dial, even from a cold start it only takes a few minutes until it has reached half. This is drivng normal in town. The Oiltemperature shows just over 100 degrees centigrade, this is also very quickly at this temperature. Water and Oil levels are excellent, Oil is clean. Had a full service not long ago. Through the winter months, the Watergauge showed one third on the dial and the Oil at 90 degrees centigrade. I know I need new ignitionleads, but I can't imagine that this would cause the problem. Can anybody tell me the normal Operating temperatures for Water and Oil through winter and summer months. Any help is much appreciated.I had a problem not long back whilst changing an Oilswitch, there is a plastic pipe that runs along the front of the engine with a T-pipe leading to the oilcooler. This small pipe sheared off. To fix it, as I needed the car the very same day to go on holiday with, I cut around 6 cm of the middle of the pipe and fitted an old radiator pipe with jubilee clips. Of course I was not sure if this would work, but I was very fortunate as there was no water leaks and the temperature was as above stated always around a third on the dial. I know I should replace this plastic pipe eventually, but I am more concerned now that the problem lies elsewere (maybe I am just paranoid with it now getting warmer outside). It is just a fact that it gets to these temperatures very very quick now.Radiatorfan kicks in at around three quarters on the dial.Any help or comments would be very appreciated.John P.S. stu h 0
not sure about professional!!!!My water temp gauge usually sits at a third, going up to, but never past halfway in traffic. Oil (i think is about 90 -going up to about 100 on the motorway giver or take!)Sounds like it may be your thermostat stuck or sticking. someone else will be able shed more light tho...glad you like the site
shail 0
Water - sits dead centre no matter how fast i drive/temp outside.Oil temp (winter) - Normal town driving 95, M'way - 102, or 104 if im going a bit too quick. Last weeks nice weather increased the above oil temps by 1-2 degrees.
cliveyp 0
Pretty much the same here. Water guage dead centre once shes warmed up, never any more. Oil has been to 106 max so far on the motorway at 90 ish..
DundeeDub 0
Before i changed mine the water dial sat vertical at 90 and the oil was up at about 100 when the car was up to temp, driving hard these both went up slightly. If now added a neuspeed thermostate (opens at a lower temp) and additional oil cooler, now the water never goes above 70 unless stationary or driving really slow and the oil never goes above 84 even at 100mph+
whapstervr6 0
thanks for the quick rplies all. I am concerned obviously. Does anyone have a picture of where the thermostat sits? Is it on the right side of the motor where the plastic pipe fitted with O rings slots into? Does anyone know of a quicker way to replace it, I remember when I was fixing the plastic pipe that snapped off, I ended up taking the front of the car apart just to be able to access the pipe running across the engine. I find so little literature on the VW Sharan, Haynes don't even do a manual for starter points.
andy 0
The location you mentioned is correct mate. I'm not sure whether you've got a problem or not to be honest. It doesn't sound like the temps you are getting are that excessive to me, just possibly the rate at which its getting there. How many miles do you think you cover before the oil is up to 100 ish. Town driving in itself will mean high temperatures as you're not getting much airflow arround the engine. Check your auxillary water pump is running, its on all the time the ignition is on, (with or without engine running) you will hear and feel a light buzzing at the rear rhs of the engine as you look at it if its ok. What are the max temps you have seen?
whapstervr6 0
Hi Andy, thanks for that, I thought as much on the location. I must say though I haven't of the auxillary fan before, but after checking, I do hear a buzzing sond from the left of the engine bay with the ignition on. I would cover roughly around 10-12 miles and oil temp is at 100ish, the water temp his middle guage around 7-10 miles.
