which driveshafts and cvs

Recommended Posts

Hi, So in my ongoing mission to eliminate the wierd noises and harshness coming from the front it now looks like i may need new cv,driveshafts or both.after replacing quite a few diffrent suspension parts a local mechanic now thinks i have an issue with the driveshafts especially the passenger side.(and true there is something going on at full lock and when canning it hard or slowing)

Where to get them and which ones to go for though,im on a budget so nothing too fancy. Can i use ones from 2.0gti mk3 or the 1.9tdi or does it have to be 2.8 specific,i also seen some cheap ones for sharan 2.8 and seat alhambra 2.8 vr6 ? could someone advise me on what will fit and what wont. cheers

Also what is a driveshaft replace job like to do yourself?

Have a butchers through the catalogue. Sign up and check parts numbers against the models in question.

Jobs underneath a car are far more easier with a lift and when it comes to suspension jobs you may need specialist tools like hub pullers etc. The only way to learn DIY is give it a go, get a Haynes, collect tools and try. It is generally easier to have a garage do that work as a lift takes so much effort out of it plus they should have the tools required (which can run into tens of thousands of pounds) so their labour times are less than DIY with a few tools.

P.S. Whining is generally shafts/gearbox - blew one up myself not long back. Your CV joints being knackered will generally be a knocking going over bumps and steering on full lock and not a whine.

Sorry to revive an old thread, I havr had a knocking noise on my car for ages now, have replaced top mounts, drop links, wishbone bushes and bottom ball joints. Arb bushes seem fine, I hear the knocking when cornering but also when pulling away and coming to a stop...omly hear it at lower speeds (probably cos my car drowns out the noises at higher speeds haha) would you say this was my drive shafts then? Whats the best way to check if they are knackered? Sorry if its a stupid question but never had to check for this problem before. Thanks guys :)
