basic stereo install driving me nuts...

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to install my stereo (which I've put in my previous two motors), but for some reason it won't work.

I've tested power to the wiring loom (it's OK), but since the stereo wasn't working when plugged in, I bypassed the wiring loom and took power direct (via inline fuse) from the battery. No good.

Testing suggests that power is coming through the wiring loom, so I bypassed the ground and ignition wires as well. Still no joy.

I've cross examined the adapter I bought and compared it to the stereo manufacturer's pin guide. everything is correct in this respect.

I've checked the fuse on the stereo, the inline fuse, the fuse box under the steering column. All is well. I also used another (known to be working) stereo, but it won't work either.

I'm just throwing this out there in case anyone can see something obvious that I'm missing. I'm (clearly) not an electrician, but I thought wiring a stereo direct to a battery was very easy.

Thanks guys. I'll try and get a picture tonight if I get a chance.

Calico - that's exactly what I've done at the moment, two lives going to the red and yellow, and the black going back to the negative on the battery. I also tried the negative going to ground through the chassis. Looks like the (two) stereos are busted.

I did remove one of the stereos just after I crashed my old car. Check all limbs are attached, check for bleeding, check for broken bones, kick your way out of the mangled wreckage and then pull your stereo through the window with you! Like Indiana Jones' hat. :-) Then i went back and rescued the missus :-D (only joking)

As Calico has said, if you have connected them directly to the battery, and nothing happens, then it's fair to say that both radios are stuffed. Check the fuses on the radios are ok. Usually a 5 or 10 amp fuse near the loom input somewhere. Make and model of radio(s) might be useful.
